Product description

About the Author

Terry Ambrose started out skip tracing and collecting money from deadbeats and quickly learned that liars come from all walks of life. He never actually stole a car, but sometimes hired big guys with tow trucks and a penchant for working in the dark when “negotiations” failed. A resident of Southern California, he loves spending time in Hawaii, especially on the Garden Island of Kauai, where he invents lies for others to read. His years of chasing deadbeats taught him many valuable life lessons including—always keep your car in the garage.

I have just finished reading Photo Finish and I absolutely fell in love with the strong, well-defined, very humanly portrayed characters. I found myself relating to the places mentioned in the book as I currently live on Oahu. I found myself laughing, being disturbed, mystified, and having "ah-ha" moments as the mystery unraveled. The suspense and action kept you motivated to know what was coming on the next page.

I don't want to give away this novel or the ending so I am going to end this review with this: Photo Finish is a well thought out mystery placed in a beautiful location with characters that will leave you with a sense of having new friends....for life. This story is a must read and I am looking forward to more of Terry Ambrose's future novels!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, Surf, Snark 6 Dec. 2016
By Andrew Bundy - Published on Amazon.com

If there were one word to sum up Wilson McKenna, that word is SNARK—and boy does McKenna have that in spades! If you like cynicism to top off your sarcasm sundae, then this is truly the book for you. Ambrose has a wonderful sense of timing with his humor. He has preternatural ability to know just when the punch line should come, just when McKenna should inwardly groan about the lunacy surrounding him, just when to whack the reader with the slapstick. Be it in action, dialogue, or the voice of our somewhat-hero narrator, this story heaps on the humor and doesn't let up. And the humor persists even when the tension might otherwise threaten to overwhelm it. No situation is too terrifying to keep our grumpy protagonist from popping off a one-liner or laughing in the face—well, mostly at the back—of mortal danger.

Ambrose's characters are well thought-out, prone to the mundanities of life (this old brah got some small bladder, yah?), and complicated. Their dialogue is snappy, true to life, and sprinkled with the lingo of the islands. And one thing Ambrose does so well is give the reader a feel for the REAL Hawaii, the one the tourists shuffle past to snap their pictures of the surface, ignoring the depths of this colorful—surprisingly dangerous—place. This is probably not the best advertising brochure for travel agencies, but that is part of what makes this story so compelling.

Photo Finish is not just a story about a cranky old landlord caught up in a whirlwind of trouble over a girl with mile-long legs, it's a story of culture, the human condition, and what lies beneath the snark.

PS: It's more snark.
4.0 out of 5 stars Photo Finish 31 Jan. 2014

Wilson McKenna manages an apartment complex after retiring as a skip tracer to Hawaii. He has a new tenant
that he has nicknamed “ Legs” who claims she is in Oahu on assignment to photograph the Sacred Falls. The falls
area has been closed due to a landslide but McKenna is sweet talked into providing her with a guide to photograph
this site. Enter the local guide, Alexander who takes Harris. After their trip to the Falls, Alexander & Harris return
with a fuzzy picture of a plane dropping a body. And so the saga begins as McKenna investigates the who, how
and why’s of the photo shows. Little does he know that he and his cronies are going to uncover several murders,
a drug smuggling ring and while being the target of a con. Will he and his cronies go unscaved?
The story includes descriptions of the beautiful landscape in Oahu plus use of the island language, customs,
superstitions and living.
This is an action packed suspense mystery with funny, quirky characters who find themselves in precarious situation.
Read and enjoy!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Personality Conflicts 27 April 2013
By RaineDear - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
It was hard for me to pick this back up each time I had put it down as I felt a personality conflict with the first two characters. Most thirty year old's are just coming into maturity and Harris comes off as late-forties with her overly confident, too worldly, I'm running this show attitude. Something just seems off with her (age-to-character) from the beginning. Not to mention her terms of endearment for Mckenna just seemed older than her years. Mckenna is in his early sixties and his attraction to Harris and the thought that he might get lucky with her was unpleasant for me. And yes I do know that those large age differences occur in real relationships, however, for me that element of Makenna's character was unattractive. The other players were believable and the crime story itself was okay, but those two main personalities ruined it for me.
1.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive and Annoying 9 July 2015
By Martha - Published on Amazon.com

I did not finish this book.
It was too repetitive and too annoying.
How many times do you need to repeat things, like going to the toilet, ogling a woman, thinking you get lucky?
I find it as well not at all funny when a 60-year-old guy gets sexually aroused by 30-year-old women, I think it is very sad instead when men use women half their age for sexual phantasies.
I am not at all interested to see how the crime story goes on, as the protagonist is so disgusting that I cannot be bothered.
I am really astonished about the good reviews.
Very disappointed!
