For the price of about 5 35mm films you can have this masterpiece of photography, with over 100 artists work shown well printed on heavy paper, each accompanied by a short essay to get you started.

Empty it certainly is not, here we have photographer after photographer, each completely different from the last, with a focus away from the documentary tradition, which is extremely refreshing in a world overpopulated by photographs like this.

The book is really aimed at those looking to research, to be inspired for their own work. The range of photography is extremely diverse, and has few particularly famous faces, with the exception of maybe Simon Norfolk and Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin. Each artist is accompanied by their website for further research.

I think anyone could find someone new they like in this book, and to me that alone is worth the extremely reasonable price. As a research tool it's up there with David Campany's 'Art and Photography' and Charlotte Cotton's 'The Photograph As Contemporary Art', but with a more segragated twist, the authors make no effort to connect the photographers contained, thus leaving them free to include whoever they wish, to great effect.

I have been trying to get my head around contemporary photography for a while now and this book illustrates it well to my mind. A diverse amount of material with interesting statements/biographies, a book that I pick up occasionally to inspire me when required. Plus, the quality of the book is superb for the money.

This is another gorgeously presented book, full colour photos etc, and helpful full page text to each photographer.
But, my problem with this as I've suggested is that like a lot of contemporary art it is a bit empty. There is some wonderful images but a lot more are just things to scan over, not something to dwell upon.
Anyway, if you've got £20+ to spare to may pass an hour or so of your time.

Format: Paperback
Empty art school pap which will encourage unoriginal and enthusiastic students to imitate and clone the drool off their predecessors. Also good to have laying around within an impressionable guest's eyeshot in the residence of a pretentious in-the-know art-fluffy. Good layout though.
