Product description

Review

'Engagingly written, this accessible introduction to articulatory phonetics tests the reader's understanding at every stage with a structured series of questions and exercises. The 20 well-balanced units cover basic theory and the essentials of English phonetics, including intonation. Any student new to phonetics will find this a valuable learning aid.' Jill House, University College London

Book Description

A problem-based introduction to phonetics, featuring over three hundred integrated exercises to help students discover and practice the subject interactively. It assumes no previous knowledge of phonetics; concepts are introduced gradually and frequent cross-referencing means that students will see how the subject fits together and how later concepts build on earlier ones.

If only every subject could be accompanied by a book like this. I'm a first year speech and language student and this is by far the best book I have come across for articulatory phonetics. Well worth the money.

This book is a brilliant introduction to phonetics. Knight explains it in a way that is easy to understand whilst still getting in all the useful information, lots of examples/diagrams and practice questions.

Book is perfect for speech therapy students. It very clearly takes you through the phonemes and the exercises are graded so that you are challenging yourself but not so much that you want to throw the book away crying! Just to say that there have been vowel shifts over the last year since the book was published so some of the vowels in the book are formed differently now but the book is still an excellent resource for students.

This book makes phonetics much more accessible for the novice student, surpassing many text books on the subject which are often very long winded!
