Product Description

Review

This is a first-rate book, which has been very well prepared and researched by its various contributors and is beautifully produced. ... This is altogether a fascinating and outstanding volume, richly endowed with copious references. As such it should provide a sure springboard for further research into the provenance and influence of the (Douglas Dales, Fairacres Chronicles)

This is a fascinating and illuminating volume which will be welcomed by scholars and general readers alike. (Angela Tilby, The Journal of Theological Studies,)

this is an erudite and essential introduction to the history, theology and spirituality contained winin the Philokalia ... and interesting and helpful introduction to a text that has shaped the Orthodox world immensely. From this volume we get a better understanding of a strand of spirituality that is firmly grounded in Scripture, tradition, and the Church, and it sparks interest in the original text and the world that it inhabits. Do NOT be decivwd, this is NOT the pilokalia. but an acemdic appraisal by several academics.. the text is vey academic sharing mind opinionated input. and has no connection with the heartful beauty of the text of the philokalia.. do not buy unless this is what you are seeking.

HASH(0x9163a468) out of 5 stars Read it...an excellent resource. 27 July 2013

This is a collection of essays about the Philokalia (which is not that hard to figure out if you take the time to look at the table of contents and back of the book). Leading scholars on the Eastern spiritual tradition have written helpful chapters on the history, theology, and spiritual practice of the Philokalia. It is a much needed introduction to this profound collection and will assist many as they delve into the transformative writings of the Philokalia.

The author of chapter 18, John Chryssavgis, is particularly eloquent and insightful.

I would also highly recommend the writings of chapter 1, Kallistos Ware.

HASH(0x9163a87c) out of 5 stars This is NOT the text of the Philokalia 27 July 2013
By Jacob P. Bentley - Published on Amazon.com

It's a collection of scholarly essays. I wanted the text itself... needless to say, I was disappointed when this arrived. Usually I'm pretty careful with this sort of thing, so shame on me, but still, between the title and subtitle, it *is* kind of confusing.
