High-Resolution AudioHigh Resolution Audio offers audio performance, reproducing original studio master recordings more faithfully than 16bit/44.1 kHz CD formats. This uncompromising quality makes High-Resolution Audio an ideal sound companion for the music lover. Fidelio headphones meet the stringent standards required for the Hi-Res Audio stamp of quality. Whether enjoying your Hi-Resolution collection or a more traditional music source, the smooth extended high frequencies of the Fidelio headphone range help you get more from your music. |
Layered Motion ControlLayered Motion Control (LMC) drivers feature a multi-layered polymer diaphragm that encases a layer of damping gel. These layers form a flexible boundary and – together with the gel – absorbs and dampens any exaggerated frequencies, resulting in a smooth and flatter frequency response. The result is a more balanced, natural and refined range of high-frequency sounds. |
Pre-Tilted DriversThe earshells are engineered to tilt at 15 degrees, fitting your ear’s natural geometry and immersing you in a truly precise and unadulterated sound performance. Audio signals are directly channeled into your ears, creating a dynamic and authentic listening experience. |

I'd asked him not to to tell me the cost before I tried all his headphones in case it affected my judgement, so when he eventually prised them off my head I was extremely surprised to learn that they cost a fraction of some of the others I'd been listening to, they were nearly the cheapest pair. The build quality ran circles around most of his collection. They're so nicely designed, built and finished that I thought I was going to have to dig quite deep to get myself a set. It really made me wonder why some premium headphones use such cheap materials when it's possible to produce headphones like this and sell them for far less. Some of the headphone cases were better made than the headphones themselves!
The X2's fit my head like a glove, hang on, that should be hat. Earmuffs? Anyway, the velvet pads are lovely and soft, make a good seal, and I never really think about the fact I'm wearing them. They clamp well enough that you don't have to worry if you bend over, but they don't crush your noggin into mush. The auto adjusting head band makes them feel far lighter than they are. Most importantly the sound quality is excellent and has everything I want from this kind of headphone - the sort of signature that's exciting and retains all those lovely little details in your favourite music. The other open-backs I tried sounded different - but that was it, just different. It wasn't that they're objectively inferior or superior (although I'd try to argue that some really were bad!) but rather that I happen to like the X2's the most. I think that's something to be kept in mind when reading reviews of things like this. You can look at all the frequency response graphs and figures you like, even verbal descriptions of sound (which I always find hard but will try in a minute!) but once you pass a certain threshold of quality it really is down to taste and hearing. It's just about enjoyment unless you're a professional with specific needs. If you look at the frequency response graphs of pretty much all headphones, you'd be tempted to think that they far from ideal because they're boosted or recessed in certain areas. However, a headphone that measured absolutely flat would sound dull and unnatural, that's just one of the oddities of human hearing. In my research (oh god, the research that went in to buying my first open headphones!) I learned that the X2's in particular have been extensively tuned by ear. To me that makes so much more sense than attempting to produce a headphone that looks better on a chart than it sounds on your head. The machines are no match for us yet!.
I can best describe the sound of the X2's as spacious, balanced, detailed and warm. There, I tried. They cope with all sorts of music, I'm yet to find a song or genre I don't enjoy through them. They're also excellent for films, vocals and details are extremely clear and when it comes to bass and sub bass they can really perform. I think because I'm used to closed cans and IEM's the bass might sound more natural to me than it might do to others, it seems that open back headphones struggle to produce the kind of tight and deep bass closed back phones can, which makes sense. Philips have managed to approach closed back bass response whilst also reaping the benefits of an open back. They're not bass cannons but they get down low and are extremely satisfying. Video games - PSVR is something else with these on your head. Sure, you look even more of a twonk, but you can't see or hear the pointing and laughing. These are so superior to "headsets" aimed at gamers it's laughable, especially when you consider how much they're charging for some of those flashing lumps of plastic.
Female vocals are always a tricky one for me with headphones, I normally choose darker sounding ones but female vocals sound sweet and clear; deeper male vocals have a good weight to them without being exaggerated. I also have a sensitivity around 2-3khz (although I believe human hearing is most sensitive at that frequency anyway so I'm not special!) and some tracks can be outright painful through the wrong cans. I think I read a review say that they were sibilant and the treble was piercing but I have no problem with the X2's and I really am sensitive to treble. It just goes to show how differently we all hear!.
They're easy to drive so a dedicated headphone amp isn't strictly necessary although if you want the best from them I think it's well worthwhile, especially to get the most out of the bottom end. Straight out the gate they sound full, spacious and involving. If you want to give them a tweak with a graphic equaliser then they respond well. I think that's probably the reason I enjoy these headphones as much as I do - they're tuned similarly to how I would equalise a pair of fun headphones. Incidentally, I never understood my friends with a zillion headphones who'll hear a lack of bass or piercing treble in certain headphones, use all sorts of weird and wonderful physical mods to try to change the sound, yet look at an equaliser like it took a plop on their grandma. Audiophilia is a special kind of madness!.
Anyhow: sound, build and comfort. For me, they tick all the boxes and they do it at a price that really, really surprised me. The niggles are really just that; niggles that have no bearing on the sound quality. The only included cable might be a bit long for some, although as they're really for home use and there is a cable tidy clip it's a very minor quibble, especially as the cable is good quality. They also use a single standard 3.5mm socket so there's plenty of aftermarket options, I got myself a nice shorter cable for a very reasonable price. The pads are removable and replaceable but because of the proprietary connector it's not as simple as it should be to change the pads, especially as Philips doesn't seem to sell direct replacements. However it's easy enough to stretch third party pads over the cups (Brainwavz HM5 fit nicely) and punch a hole for the cable. My last niggle is the lack of any storage - just a cloth bag would have been a welcome inclusion. Saying that, at this price it's churlish to complain and I got myself a nice case to keep them safe from the cats. Well, safe-ish. Nothing is truly safe.
So it has to be five stars with added sprinkles. In my search for a pair of open-back headphones I tried far more expensive headphones that I enjoyed far less. It was still a fun ride along the way and given I've spent a fraction of my initial budget I'm pretty sure I'll buy some others that offer a different sort of experience. As for the X2's at the very least I think you'd struggle to find a sturdier pair of headphones and most people will find them comfortable. As we all hear differently and have our own preferences it's impossible to say if you'll enjoy their sound as much as I do, but I certainly hope so. They may be considered a "starter" headphone for budding audiophiles, but I think for your average music lover these could well be where the journey ends. A couple of the people who've tried mine have gone on to buy a pair of their own (Amazon, where's my commission?!) so they must be doing something right. There's a handful of audio purchases I've made that I now wouldn't do without and the X2's are one of them. They're built so well that they'll last for years and years, yet I still have it in the back of my mind to buy another pair while I still can and have them preserved in magic headphone pickle juice. Pretty sure there's an audio company somewhere that sells that :)
Anyhow, give them a go (entirely unrelated fact: Amazon have an obscenely good return policy) and I think you'll be very pleased you did. Happy listening :)
Sound quality
The Philips Fidelio X2's are an exciting sounding headphone. The bass is punchy and detailed, it extends low but is not overpowering. The mids are very detailed, extend high and vocals sound lush! The highs are also extended and detailed but to me, they sounded a bit too bright and fatiguing with some types of music or game sounds.
Soundstage is decently wide. The imaging wasn't great, it wasn't bad either but it was just a little lacking when trying to pinpoint enemies in games and instruments in music.
Build quality
The Philips Fidelio X2 is built exceptionally well... I've had cans twice as expensive that don't even come close the build quality of these. There is metal everywhere you would want it to make them strong. They have velour ear pads which are very nice and the headband is covered in quality leather. The cable is also very good quality and is braided which gives it a premium feel. These headphones are also gorgeous looking in my opinion as they kinda have a retro vibe with modern elements too.
Comfort
The Philips Fidelio X2 are extremely comfy and were a great improvement over my Sony MDR-1A. The huge ear pads and comfort strap are filled with memory foam which feels amazing. The clamping force is a bit tight I didn't mind it but if you have a big head it might be too much. However, the headband could be stretched out a bit if needed, although I was easily able to wear them for long gaming sessions with no problems at all.
Overall the Philips Fidelio X2 are exceptional headphones, especially when you consider the asking price! I think it would be challenging to find anything as good for less. If you prefer laid back headphones then they might not be for you, as was the case for me. If you favour a brighter sound signature I think you would be very happy with the X2's.
P.S If you are wondering what is the difference between these and the pricier Fidelio X2HR version then let me tell you. Apparently, the only differences from what I've read is that Gibson bought Philips out and have subsequently rebranded the headphone, raised the price and swapped out the ear pads for a more breathable pair. The sound is unchanged.
I have tried 3 pairs of the standard X2s and recently tried 3 different pairs of the HR model after they went on sale. All 6! of these headphones have had terrible channel imbalance, some significantly louder in the left channel while others louder in the right. Amazon (Uk) seem to be selling used pairs as new. 2 of the headphones that I received were already open and covered in hair/dust & the cable just tossed into the box... The 3rd pair of the HR headphones I received had glued pads that were difficult to remove and muffled bass... Rather shocking to see this considering the controversy from a few years back.
I give up on these headphones... I really wanted a good pair, but it's not worth the effort.
