By the way, don't bother calling the "helpline". In trying to establish some form of rapport with the impudent cretin at the other end I mentioned that the machines were popular in Holland and Germany. Ah that's it, he said, they must like their coffee to taste of chlorine.
So where will the old Dutch masters at Philips go next? Will they un-invent the compact disc and replace it with Betamax? We await developments.
I did not find any plastic taste as mentioned in other comments, however I live in Scotland and the water here is of good quality.
I think having to have multiples coffee pod holders is a bit annoying but still coffee pods are sensibly cheaper than the coffee capsule used by other coffee machines.
Overall I am very pleased with it and would recommend it
Update - I have washed out the water holder with fairy liquid a few more times, I have left the tower to stand full of water, which I change for fresh every time I use. The taste has gone if this is done, but if water is left in the tower it returns. Hopefully this will disappear over the next few days. Not brilliant, and I wonder if it points to cheap plastic fabrication process, which is a shame for a part that is in contact with something I drink. Im guessing its not BPA free, but then I'm not giving my young baby coffee! I just need lots of coffee. The coffee is still initially cool, so you need to run a cup through before the first cup is made and warm up the receiving cup, which adds a bit of faff which should not be necessary in my opinion. All in all, if the plastic taste goes, I will be happy with the machine and may put the star rating up to 4 eventually. It is not a bad coffee after water change for tower and making a cup initially without coffee to heat water and warming cups you need in microwave (make cups a bit damp and blast for 10-15 seconds). These 3 parts of the process should be unnecessary, but none are particularly difficult or time consuming.
£140 at Argos and only £49 including delivery here.
Thoroughly recommend this machine.
Very easy to clean, stylish and user friendly. I haven't had any problems with plastic smells or the coffee temperature.
Once the plastic taste is gone it makes a good cup of coffee. Be aware, though, that it only comes with 2 pod attachments and not all pods will work with the ones you get in the box. This could mean extra expense if you want to use it for hot chocolate for example (about £10 for attachment).
Having said this, for £70 you can't really go wrong. Don't consider buying this one if you see it elsewhere for more though! (Up to £150 some places.)

I had to phone Philips to get advice on using this machine as directions are misleading. The two cup holder is for use with ordinary coffee bags.Published 16 months ago by Jim Wallace

not as good as my old cube one. Even on the lowest setting, the coffee dispensers are a tad too high which means your coffee ends up frothy rather than having a "crema". Read morePublished on 11 Sept. 2014 by S. A. Taylor
