Six AAA batteries will give you 6 hours of truly portable listening and an AC/DC adaptor is included for all other occasions.
Despite the Dynamic Bass Boost, bass is still lacking - no doubt about it, but when you consider the size of this unit (approx 7inches Long, 3inches high and 2inches deep) it does a cracking job. If you want truly portable multimedia speakers you could do a lot worse than these.
All the laws of physics mean its simply not possible, but phillips have done a smashing job with these. They're so good they make me wanna put a 5 star review on to encourage others to pick the same.
OK so they're not hifi quality but stick with low to medium volumes and I forget I'm not listening to my hifi if I'm using them as background music. They're very easy to listen to and are not metallic or harsh like most small ones. The bass is great for the size but turn them up and they start to sound smaller. They can still do a passable job when played loudly though which is more than most can manage. They are also quite detailed. I can pick out individual instruments such as xylephones and organs for example. Never thought I could do that with things this small.
I've heard much bigger speakers that can't match these. They are awesome for the price and size. They can't quite beat the laws of physics but if you want some portables to take with you places, or just want to carry your music around the house these are brilliant for the job and sound brilliant with an ipod touch as the source.
Not only is it sleek, shiney and black on the front panel (silver on its behind), with a minamilist look, but it matches my black sony NW-A1000 an absolute dream! It has a little stand bit at the back to pull out, so that it stands on its own. It is fully compatable with the sony NW-A1000 and I'm sure many other MP3's as you only have to plug it into where your headphones would normally go. I was thinking about getting one of the speakers with a dock, but sony's one is mega expensive and the other so-called compatable speakers are really only for ipods, as sony's ones tend to fall out of the docking port.
Looks aside, the sound is great, and easy to use, with 4 buttons on the top which all seem to pump the bass up - for such a little thing , I really didn't expect much sound, but you can blast this baby up to party volume! If you do have a sony MP3 like the NW-A1000/A3000, then I would advise that you find the code sequence off the internet to unlock the volume , so that you can turn up the sound on your MP3 player and the speaker set - really loud!
The case for it looks nice too - only down side is, that I don't think you can fit the adapter into it too. I got it so there are some great deals around for it - espcially good for peeps who don't like the Ipod and have a different MP3 player.
A fab portable system to slip into your bag, or carry room to room in your house (great for girls on getting ready to go out!)
This slim, compact little piece of equipment does the business. Unlike some previous reviewers, I find the sound and volume is excellent. There are on/off switches for both Bass Boost and Surround Stereo (I actually keep these in the ON position so that I get the full works!). The only time that distortion might occur is if the volume is turned up so loud that it really hurts the ears - why would you want to do that anyway. I like my music loud, and this speaker gives sufficient output and quality for my needs.
Although it can be powered by batteries (so that it is mobile), I have never used this feature. Mine is plugged in, using the supplied power adapter. It also comes with a speaker extension lead - but my complaint about this is it's too small. When I attach it to my laptop, there's hardly space between the two units. It should be 2 or 3 times the length I feel.
One thing to remember when using the speaker: always turn the volume on the MP3 player to maximum first. The actual sound output can then be adjusted by the speaker's own volume control. I sometimes forget to do this, and then wonder why the sound quality and volume is subdued. Maybe some of the reviewers, who state that the volume / sound is not as they expected, have made this very mistake.
In conclusion, I'm extremely happy with this choice of speaker - it's perfect for my music needs.
