Philips Lumea uses an innovative light based technology called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to break the cycle of hair regrowth. Gentle pulses of light are applied at the root and, after several treatments, hair is prevented from growing back.
Philips Lumea, derived from salon professional IPL technology, makes it possible to remove hair safely, effectively and easily at home. Philips Lumea Prestige is the culmination of 14 years of research and development in collaboration with some of the leading dermatologists.

Suitable Hair And Skin Types
Philips Lumea Prestige works effectively on a wide variety of hair and skin types - from naturally dark blonde, brown and black coloured hairs and on skin tones from very white to dark brown. As with other IPL based treatments, Philips Lumea cannot be used to treat white / grey, light blonde or red hair and is not suitable for very dark skin. This is due to the high contrast required between the pigment in hair colour and pigment in the skin tone.
Studies show up to 92 per cent hair reduction in just 3 treatments***, resulting in smooth, hair-free skin. To maintain results, touch-up every 4 to 8 weeks.
The SmartSkin sensor advises the best setting for your skin tone, anytime you want.

So here's my honest review. I hope it helps people who are thinking about this product and aren't white or haven't received it for free:
Background: I'm Indian, with medium olive skin (on the light side for an Indian). I would give a grizzly bear stiff competition in terms of hairiness. I also sadly succumb to the patriarchal imposition that dictates women to waste years of their lives toiling to achieve smooth, hair free limbs.
Lumea usage: I used it on my face (sideburns), underarms, full legs and full arms. I've done the course of 5 sessions at 2 week intervals. I then left it for a month and did a top up. It's now been 3 weeks since my top-up. I mainly used setting 4 as this what what the machine determined to be my highest tolerance.
Results: Obviously the most important bit so I'll put this first so you can stop reading. I'm happy to say that it works. No one is more surprised than me. Are my days to scything through the matted limb jungle finally over? Apparently yes.
- I noticed visible results after session 1. Hair was visibly patch with bald smooth bits all over. needed to shave once before session 2.
- After session 2, 80% of hair didn't grow back in the 2 weeks between sessions. There were clear line of hair in places I had missed.
- After session 5, I was pretty hairless for 2 weeks. Fine sparse hairs started growing back after the third week.
- Conclusion: Totally works to REDUCE and SLOW DOWN hair growth for prolonged periods. Hair does gradually start growing back which is why you need top ups to further retard growth. One off £300, 1 mess-free hour every few months compared to many hours of mess, tears and ongoing expense is definitely worth it. You don't need all the attachments though.
Sun exposure: The instructions recommend avoiding significant sun exposure for a number of days before and after sessions. I wasn't able to follow this as i started using the device during peak summer. Good weather is fleeting here and I had no intention of cowering indoors and wearing long sleeves through the glorious heat.
Interactions with other products: The small-print says not to use the product on skin treated with isotrentinoin, azelaic acid, AHA/BHA in the last week. These will all be very familiar to people with acne as these are our staples. Thankfully I'm not on roaccutane, but I have been using azelaic acid and AHA/BHA. I decided to leave at least 24 hours between applying these and using the Lumea, but not a whole week.
Packaging and device: It comes with a handy pouch that fits the device, cable, accessories etc. It has 5 attachments for different body parts. I do use them but not sure they do much beyond what the standard attachment does. The device looks sleek.
Ease of use: The gun shape is easy enough to grip. It can be used either plugged in or unplugged. I exclusively use it plugged in because I don't trust the battery life to last for an entire full body session. It's a bit noisy when on because of the whirring of the cooling fan. There's a handy skin tone detector that helps you choose a setting, but manually choosing settings is also easy. Instructions are easy to understand and it takes to time to become a pro at zapping.
Pain: This is one of my main areas of criticism. All the reviews I previously read said that the Lumea was painless and zaps felt like a mild, hot rubber band twang. Maybe that's the case for white people, but let me categorically tell you categorically, for people with a darker skin tone, THIS HURTS. The machine recommended setting of 4 on my skin is excruciating. 3 is still pretty uncomfortable. 2 is mild. A full leg on 4 leaves me trembling and prickling for hours afterwards. It probably doesn't help that I've been out in the sun. I try to use mainly 4 but drop down to 3 for thighs and 2 for bikini line. Still works though. The flashing is quite bright. I use sunglasses.
Time: Takes an hour for me to do all areas (legs, arms, underarms, face). This is brilliant for me. Epilating that amount of surface would take half a day. Professional waxers at salons have been known to give up on my half way. I blunt several razors trying to shave even a single leg. (I have huge legs, not fat, just vast, don't ask...).
Boredom: The hold and slide action is pretty mechanical, the machine isn't too noisy and you're not meant to be looking directly at the flashing anyway. All this makes it a perfect activity to do while watching TV, listening to a podcast or having a phone conversation. WIN.
Smell: expect a lingering smell of singed hair.
Cleaning: you do end up with singed blobs of hair on the window and attachments. These can be wiped off with a damp cloth (provided). Be careful, the window gets hot!
Hope this is helpful.
Ultimately I've found this to be an accurate description. Followed instructions to the letter regarding shaving beforehand and regular scheduling... Even downloaded the Lumea app to help keep track of the earlier treatments.
By the end of the first 6 weeks I must admit I was despondent. Hadn't seen any improvement whatsoever, despite my skin/hair colouration meaning I was applicable to safely use the highest (5) setting for the IPL bulb. I even started wondering if I would be one of the anomalies in the initial tests for Lumea who saw more hair growth or indeed seemed completely immune.
In the end, it all became a (worthwhile!) exercise in patience. Kept at it past the 6 week mark out of sheer belligerence, seeing as this item was an expensive investment, but had started falling back on my epilation routines to tide me over. Interestingly, despite having read a number of accounts from reviewers warning not to epliate or wax (anything that pulls the hairs out by the root, really) between treatments, it was only a week or so after the return of my epilating that I realised I was - finally! - getting results from the IPL.
The biggest indicator is the fact the hairs aren't growing as fast or as strongly per usual. They are starting to become very fine which has additionally made epilation much quicker and easier. My epilator, I fear, may well become defunct within a year! The hairs on all parts of the skin I've used Lumea upon are really beginning to give up. At this stage, each stretch of time before another IPL treatment and my using the epilator are becoming longer and longer. I cannot even describe how happy I am with this (long-in-the-coming!) development, as I have dabbled and struggled with pretty much every tool and method of hair-removal since early teens to my late twenties. As a time-tested enemy of body hair I give Lumea my seal of approval and would happily recommend this product to anyone willing to invest in a little more time and effort into remaining hair free.
To conclude: I'm really grateful for this product (and apologies for the massive review!)
I started to see less hair growth after 2 sessions, and after 4 sessions in I can now go 7_10 days without noticing any hair in my underarms/legs/bikini area. My skin has got so smooth and when the hair grows back, which is like just 20% of the amount before, it's very soft and fine. I have noticed large amount of bold areas increasing after each session. I gotta say though that this hurts! It recommended 4 for me but I can't go higher than 3, it's just too painful. In bikini area I have to use 2. I would advise to do 1 leg and let the machine cool down and do another leg few hours after, as it gets quite hot and starts to hurt more.
I plan to continue with sessions every 2 weeks and I can see never touching a razor again. This machine just exceeded my expectations and has really boosted my confidence as I can now wear dresses every day without having to worry about shaving which I despised so much!
I highly recommend it, worth every penny even at full price! ( I got it for £280, lucky me)
