Showing these off to every visitor to the house I was invariably met with the same initial response - "Why would you want to control lights with your phone?" However once people had seen and tried the app everyone was suitably impressed and could see the point. My wife had the same reaction but now has the app on her phone and without thinking changes the lights frequently to suit the mood.

Set up is easy - plug in the bridge to your router, connect the bulbs to a suitable fitting, download the app and then follow the instructions on the app to link the bridge to your device. You can link many devices to the bridge by following the same procedure - basically you start the app and press the button on top of the bridge. There is also the option to link the app via the internet so that if you are away from home you can still control the lights. This was somewhat more complicated and involved a bit of random clicking to and fro from the app to the website until it started to work. This extra work may be worth it if you want to control the lights whilst you are away - perhaps to give the impression that the house is still occupied. There doesn't seem to be a limit to how many devices can be connected at once either. Every member of the house has their own app. And I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they do not seem to interfere either - we sometimes "argue" over the lighting scheme by choosing one after another on different devices and the system copes very well.

There are some lighting schemes included which are very effective or you can make your own by importing a photo and choosing colours from the photo for each bulb.

Philips take their innovative LED lighting range to a new level with a range of bulbs that are controlled by your home wifi system. This review related to the Philips Hue Personal Wireless Starter pack which contains a base station and three GU10 (in hold money replacements for halogen 50 watt light bulbs) bulbs.

The system is easy to set up as long as you have an intuitive sense for electronics as there are no instructions until you access the online instructions reading a barcode on your tablet or phone or type it in to your computer! Connect the hub to your router, and note that this needs to be a physically wired connection using an ethernet cable (supplied). A wireless connection to the Hue hub is not possible. The hub also needs to be powered using the supplied mains adapter. The hub should then light up in blue indicating it is connected to your network. Not surprisingly the bulbs should be installed in a GU10 compatible light fittings. The light switch(es) should then be turned on, and for the system to work left permanently on. You then need to download an app to control the bulbs. Android and iOS apps are available from Philips free and are suitable for both tablets and phones. Once the app is downloaded, and active you then need to pair the app with the hub by pressing the single button on the centre of the hub. Note that you need to be connected to the same wifi network using your phone or tablet when pairing. Then you can control the lights. The apps come with instructions to guide you through these latter steps.

The system allows you to:

1. Turn bulbs on or off individually using an Android or iOS app, or using a Philips website once you've registered.
2.

The idea is that you can replace `boring' white bulbs with ones offering a choice of colours to select between at the (remote) press of a button. Thus, the atmosphere of a room can be changed from conventional white light to sky blue hue or sunset orange on demand. In essence these are mood lamps writ small and remotely controllable from a smart phone. There are various default colours but it is possible to vary the precise hue and even sample colours from an iPhone photo.

The potential applications are quite wide ranging from a simple wish to match lights to the décor of a room (but don't expect to achieve `paint chart' accuracy) or a mood changer to jazzing up a room for a party or a romantic meal (`as he gazed into her eyes he subtly changed the ambience via his smart phone under the table'). I can see these enlivening a small flat for example by offering an ability to vary the atmosphere.

It's a nicely presented boxed set of bulbs that could have benefitted from a detailed manual rather than the fine print card I had to read with my Grandparents' magnifying glass.

The bulbs (three in this pack) fit easily into GU10 fittings although they have a deeper profile and therefore stand proud rather than sit flush. This jarred slightly to start with but I rarely look at the fitting unless I need to change a bulb. It probably isn't a big deal where I tried them (a kitchen) but it may be more of a challenge in a more conspicuous area like a bedroom spot in the ceiling.

The next step in the setting up process was straightforward: attaching the `hue bridge' to my router using the supplied cable and then plugging it in.
