Philips PerfectCare OptimalTEMP range has one temperature setting for all ironable fabrics, from denim to silk. Iron different fabrics in any order without having to pre-sort your ironing, adjust the settings or wait for the iron to heat up or cool down. Each iron or steam generator in this range produces a huge amount of steam power to tackle the toughest of creases in cottons and linens, helping you dress to impress in half the time for any occasion. PerfectCare has been tested and approved by Woolmark.
What is OptimalTEMP technology?
Optimal moisture and a heat of 130 degrees is required to remove all creases and iron effectively. PerfectCare, with its OptimalTEMP technology, offers the combination of high steam pressure with one optimal temperature that is safe for use on all ironable fabrics.
OptimalTEMP has been made possible thanks to the cyclonic steam chamber and the control processor. The cyclonic steam chamber ensures that, at a gentle temperature, consistently high steam can be delivered at the push of a button, where other steam generators at the same temperature would leak or deliver little to no steam. The control processor keeps the soleplate at a consistent temperature at all times, which makes it safe to use on all ironable fabrics, never being too hot or too cold.
Earlier irons used a hot soleplate alone as a means of removing creases and pressing garments. Later, the addition of a steam feature allowed for ironing with greater ease and speed, but required different temperature settings for different fabrics. Different temperature settings also interfered with the iron's ability to deliver steam. The higher the temperature, the more steam was possible, but the lower the temperature, the poorer the steam output.
Because of this, all irons and steam generators work with a soleplate of up to 260 degrees to generate enough steam. Furthermore, the soleplate serves only to press fabric, not to remove creases, steam is most efficient for this job.
1) Soleplate temperature is maintained at all times, so you can't burn your fabrics.
2) High temperature and high pressure steam reaches deep into the fabric layers to loosen and smooth out deep creases in thick materials such as linen and pure cotton.
Approved by independent experts
This technology has been tested and approved by independent textile experts on the most delicate fabrics like silk, cashmere, wool and polyester.
No more scorched clothes
This iron promises to never burn your garments again, safely rest this iron flat down on the ironing board or clothing, rather than the heel rest, to reduce any risk of repetitive strain on your wrist.
Powerful pressurised steam for 2x faster crease removal
Pressurised steam is technically measured in bars of pressure. The higher the bar pressure the more powerful the steam comes out of the soleplate to penetrate deeper into the fabric layers. This steam generator creates 5 bars of steam pressure, up to 120g per minute of continuous steam and a 240g steam boost ideal for getting through larger ironing loads in half the time.
The iron can be used vertically and the steam is powerful enough to be used to iron out creases from curtains or hanging clothes for example suit jackets or dresses that might need a refresh.
Maximum steam in two minutes
No more waiting for your iron to heat up, PerfectCare has a quick heat-up time and is ready to use in just 2 minutes, even the powerful steam. Turn it on, prepare your ironing area and get ready to go.
Philips SteamGlide soleplate is durable, scratch resistant and provides a superior glide on all fabrics for effortless ironing. The protective material on the plate makes it scratch-resistant so your iron can stay optimum for longer.
Easy de-calc process and calc clean reminder
Easy De-Calc, hassle-free and effective calc removal to extend the life of your steam generator. Open the Easy De-Calc outlet on the side of the steam generator base to remove any left over water. This process takes less than a minute of easy maintenance. The reminder light indicates when to carry out the de-calc process every 10 hours of use to extend the lifetime.
1.5 litre detachable water tank
The 1.5 litre water tank gives over 2 ½ hours of ironing with fewer refills, perfect for larger ironing loads. This water tank is detachable so you can easily fill under the tap or empty into the sink.
Power efficient at 2400 watts, this steam generator uses the optimal amount of energy for the desired task.
Safety Auto Off
This iron shuts off automatically when left unattended after 2 minutes, when left flat on its soleplate or after 3 minutes when stood up on its heel rest.
Convenient Carry Lock
Now it's easier to carry your iron with no risk of the iron slipping off the base. The iron locks securely to the steam generator, so you can carry your appliance easily around the house.
No more trailing cables, 2 cord storage compartments housed on the side of the base provide a safe place to tidy the steam hose and power cable away.

The unit and iron feels very well made, looks good, comes well packaged and is extremely easy to use. My only real niggle is the mechanism for storing the power and steam cables, which is done via voids in the sides of the main housing. It's fiddly and often needs quite a few goes to get the complete wires in the cubby holes. Like everything, they were perfectly accommodated when unboxed and I've not replicated this yet! I think this might be addressed in future designs, but is likely to get easier with time and practice.
I read other reviews about water egress at "easy de-calc" function- the screw wasn't particularly tight when I first looked so I screwed it up and I've had no problems. On closer inspection, it has been designed so that the screw doesn't need to be entirely taken out before the water will come out (a channel starts just below the screw thread). This is why it might leak if it's not done up tightly. There was already some water in the iron system (another complaint I've read here) but there was an enclosed leaflet which stated that the iron is tested with water in the factory, so no problems there either.
I read reviews about the noise, I haven't found it too loud. When it steams, there's obviously a constant hiss, and periodically there is a noise when the steam re-compresses which is louder, but lasts only seconds (perhaps up to 10). Don't let this put you off.
A few practical considerations which might be useful for potential buyers.Read more ›
I did my research and chose Philips as they give a 30 day money back guarantee; a 2 year warrantee and this iron had been tested and approved by independent textile experts Woolmark and Gold. Philips is the world's number one ironing brand and also won the 2011 Which Awards Best Small Home Appliance Brand - yes, I really do do my research.
When the box arrived it was rather large but once out of the packaging the system itself is quite compact compared to some generator irons I have seen. It also looks really nice in white and blue.
The whole system weighs 5kg but you are only lifting the iron once in place which is really light at 1.2kg as the water is contained in the base unit.
You will need more room for storage than your average iron so think about where it might go unless you are happy to have it sitting on the kitchen surface.
There is an instruction booklet but there is also a quick start guide on the box lid itself and that's all I needed to get going. There are a few images showing you how to fill the water tank, plug it in, switch it on, wait 2 minutes for the temperature indicator to show and off you go, all ready to start ironing. It really is that simple.
The detachable water tank holds an impressive 1.5l and will quite easily get through about 2 hours of ironing, about the maximum I am willing to stand about ironing so perfect for me.Read more ›
It even has an easy de-calc which takes less than a minute. On the iron it says this is the easiest and most efficient anti-calc system from Philips and I can see why. There is a small dial on the side that you twist and after emptying the contents you simply twist it back in again, make sure it's tight or you may get a little leakage.
The two steam buttons allow you to control ironing very precisely, use the half steam button when ironing around buttons so that you only iron at the front and so avoid re-ironing the body of the garment. The body of the steam generator locks the iron in place which seems like a little feature until you use it and see how useful it is in a busy household.
The mains cable and the cable to the iron from the steam generator are fine in terms of length but again if you use it with the Easy 8 it's better because of the features built into the board (like the large stand and the cable holder).
It is large and it isn't inexpensive but this is a quality product that works very well. It's easy to use and won't be expensive to run. Overall I think that over time it will easily pay for its self.
A brilliant product well done philips.
