Myself and my partner have ours on either side of the bed, and they are useful for when we need a bit of light to read the time, or have a late night chat, or get up at night without turning on the main light (when you have just got up, your eyes have enough 'night vision' to see comfortably in the light these things throw). The lights would also make a nice child's comfort light for the same reason, and especially because they are not plugged into the mains.
The lights take 10 hours to recharge, and some other reviewers have noted that this is too long, but to be fair, this is about how long NiMH rechargeable batteries should be charged for. Any shorter and you start to kill battery life.
The only slight issue I have with them is that it would have been nice if you could take the 'candles' out of their holders and put them in better ones. Nevertheless, they are good for the price as long as you realise they are primarily mood lights.
** Edit Sept 2013 **
I have found an issue with these candles, in that they occasionally appear to stop working after charging. To fix this, attach them to the charger and flip them so they light up. While they are still lit, remove them from the charger and then flip them off. They then work perfectly.
In use they give a nice glow, barely enough to light a room but adding some atmosphere. If you look directly at them it's pretty obvious that it's an LED randomly flickering and fading up and down, but viewed askance from the corner of your eye they're really quite effective. Overall they seem a bit over-priced and I'm not sure I'd use them anywhere a normal votive candle or tea-light would work, the real thing is still much nicer, but I can see they'd be really useful in certain heat-sensitive locations, like on an enclosed shelf. They'd also make safe night-lights for kids, although if your kids are as curious about electronic gadgets as I was then don't expect them to last the night out...
I was very pleased to try this new budget version and I was not entirely disappointed with what I found.
Firstly, in use these lights look just as good as their more expensive cousins and that is probably the main thing. The bad news is that the classy feel of the dearer lights is not present. These lights are made not from glass but from a very lightweight plastic although until you see them from close up them they do very much resemble the posh ones. The dearer lights work well outside on patio tables and will not easily be blown of the table by the breeze. Not so the plastic versions which are very lightweight indeed. Philips have also economised on the charging method as the induction charging stand is missing and replaced by a inelegant charging brick with twin cables to connect directly to the lights.
So would I buy one set of the expensive lights or two of these? If I wanted to use them outside or in a situation where they were likely to be handled then I would buy the posh ones. For indoor use and when the lights are situated out of reach then I would probably go for the budget set.
Pleasant lighting effect
Looks very similar to the more costly version
Lightweight and lower quality build quality
May not be stable in outdoor use
Standard non inductive charging
At first glance, they look fine, the light given off is reasonably authentic, and they last for a decent amount of time - 10 hours.
However the budget soon shows through, to get the full 10 hours requires a 10 hour charge (eeek!!) and they drain pretty quickly if not used. This is quite a downside, as alot of the time you will want to use these impromptu, and won't have the upfront planning foresight to charge them up.
On the plus side, they look authentic, the tilt on/off is nice, and they come at a very reasonable asking price, so it's certainly not all bad.
If you are looking for something that looks good without a huge outlay of some of the more expensive models, these might be the ticket.
