I think it's best to split this review into:
1. Why buy an electric toothbrush?
Frankly I've been using a Braun/Oral B for so long that I lack the muscles to go back to hand brushing. You trade off the buzz of the motor for a vast improvement in dental hygiene.
2. Why buy a sonic toothbrush?
According to a quick web search, the sonic toothbrush combines the usual motorised brush action with "turbulent fluid dynamics". In short all that saliva and toothpaste sloshes around and scours the plaque off your teeth and can shoot effective cleansing eddies up to 4mm from the brush head, which penetrate BETWEEN the teeth. After 3 goes I'm totally hooked. The cleansing feeling is much more intense than anything my normal Braun produced. However the sound of the thing is -well like a very hungry mosquito. You have to perform precise oral gymnastics to keep the supercharged froth in your mouth, while trying to avoid the back of the brush from touching either your lips or gums- otherwise you'll be buzzing for hours. Good job it gradually steps up in intensity on an initial learning programme over 14 sessions. Normally I have to floss to remove plaque and bits of starchy gunk out from between my now middle aged teeth. Everything had been shook loose by the sonic buzz today.Read more ›
The UV sanitizer and chargeing dock are big bits of kit which are a bit intrusive and take up a lot of space, so are not recommended if you are struggling for space in your family bathroom. I don't actually have a plug in my bathroom so this sits outside in the kitchen alongside my electric razor! Its pretty functional looking and is not particularly nice to have on display, but what toothbrush is?? It will be nice when designers of these soprts of things start to realise that people like nice looking gadgets, even if they do the most mundane of jobs!
Now, my parents had a bad experience with a similar model to this - in the space of a week they cracked 5 teeth between them. It turns out that for older types of fillings these sonic toothbrushes can have a pretty bad effect - my dad lost half his front tooth! So I would only recommend these if your teeth are strong and, if you have fillings, they are less than 15 years old - not a medical opinion BTW so ask your dentist. Mum and Dad obviously took there toothbrush back and could probably have sued for a fortune, until they realised there was something in the fine print about this.Read more ›
I've been using a Braun Oral-B Professional 7000 for sometime, but that costs only a third as mush as this Sonicare. You soon realise you're using a high end product.
The first thing you notice is that the brush heads are of a far simpler design than the Braun Oral-B which seem to have become ever more elaborate over time. The next thing is just how much the Sonicare tickles, but that sensation soon passes with regular use. The third thing was just how much cleaner - and I go as far as to say dentist polished - your teeth feel.
There's also a gum massaging mode that actually feels quite nice. It leaves your gums with a gentle ache, like they've just had a workout. Gum massage is supposed to increase blood flow, firm up gum tissue and help prevent gum disease. It's something to do once in a while and there are sensitive and quick modes as well.
The travel bag would be great if it had room for the toothbrush and the travel recharger, but this is the only flaw in the package.
I'd say this is much better than its lower cost rivals and well worth the additional investment.
This product works well when it works, but don't buy one unless you enjoy having things repaired a lot.

This brush is a premium product. It takes a while to get used to the sensation of using the brush but once you do you will certainly have cleaner teeth. Read morePublished 1 month ago by David
I love my sonicare - I have sensitive teeth and gums and unless I use this, they can be painful and my gums bleed. Read morePublished 9 months ago by Jane
Great when it works but it stops shortly after a year. I bought replacement and again it lasted a year. Philips is not interested. Get Braun.Published 15 months ago by Greg_
It is an excellent brush. Shame it never lasted more than two years. The battery died which I've now discovered is quite common for sonicares.
No way of fixing it or repair. Read more
