I have a Philips 39"led TV that only outputs (digitally) via coaxial.
Now with optical connections being the favoured method this left my choices for a budget soundbar that was above the twin phono marque very low.
So I looked at and came back to then purchased this soundbar and subwoofer combination.
A simple digital coaxial cable from the back of the TV would allow me to then listen to all connected kit.
The box arrives with the bar in 3 parts, assembly is okay but the screws are tiny so don't lose any.
Construction is plastic with wraparound speaker grille which adds to the low proile and width this product offers which was another selling point.
Its aesthetically pleasing to look at and compliments the TV perfectly being the same brand.
An ever-present amber glow is on 2-4-7 to indicate status and selected input, yes even to tell you it's off. May annoy some.
Subwoofer is MDF but is finished well on the outside, the front port hole might tempt young ones to sticking their hands in (let's not go there) but provided its a metre away from the bar it's happy so mine now sits behind the TV until said child gets a bit older.
It's also equally important for the sub to be a metre away from any kind of disc player, as the low frequencies can interfere with the reader.
Note then that a corner placement needs at least 10cm from the wall or you will probably get the boom effect, and not in a nice way.
Subwoofer is passive, powered by the soundbar and is optional for pleasing the spouse who didn't think you needed one in the first place.
So to performance, Fast and the Furyan (get it?) Part 6-(really!!Read more ›
I was left with this, the Roth Sub Zero and the Samsung HW-E350. I had previously owned the LG NB2020a, and even though the sound was pin sharp and crisp, had zero customization and a very poor bass, which left me feeling like I had spent £100 on nothing more than a minor improvement on my TV speakers.
So I went off to Richer Sounds, the experts after all, for some advice and demonstrations.
I tried the highly regarded Roth Sub Zero, and even though it sounded good, with nice bass, but with no Dolby or DTS sound enhancement, didn't offer anything that stood out. The Samsung E-350, even though cost more than the rest sounded the worst of the three, with a very tinny sound coming from the speakers and a poor bass.
As the adviser pointed out, to have a half decent system, you really need a seperate sub-woofer to offer the full range of sound, which, even though some of these proclaimed to either have or have a decent equivalent, simply didn't when it came to it, certainly not at these prices anyway.
I then suggested this Philips system which the adviser raved about, saying they were good sellers in their stores throughout the country.
To start, the subwoofer offers some fantastic depth without overpowering the sound; it was while listening to it that i truly understood what he meant about having a separate sub.
The mid and high pitch were good without sounding excellent, and to be honest, in this area the LG was better. This system offered the option to customize both the bass and treble, with the Dolby digital making a nice addition also. As for the surround sound, I had to smile, it was terrible! I honestly don't know why they bother!Read more ›
Very impressive packaging by Philips. All components well protected and 95% of packaging recyclable.
I anticipated a long package for a soundbar. However the unit is in 3 parts but easily plugged together to make the 'bar'. The whole unit is slim and unobrusive when sited in front of the TV. Connections to a modern TV simple enough but you do need to buy a digital optical cable as an extra.
Most importantly its performance?
For me, a tad disappointing. Nice to have sound output at the front of the TV. However there seemed too much bass and maybe a bit muffled. The remote contol is slow to respond and I could find little difference in adjusting the levels of bass and treble. A lot depends on your hearing and expectations. The button on the remote for 'surround' sound is a waste of time unless you like surreal 'ghostly' echo sound!
However, this unit is not to be dismissed. Good volume without distortion. Many options for connectivity to other equipment. I have yet to link my Blue-Ray player to it!
Chuckle, just switched back to TV based sound and happily switched back to the soundbar.
