handy for small quantities

This is a 4 piece set:

~ Hand blender shaft
~ Blender blades
~ Large volume bowl with blade
~ Measuring jug with plastic click seal lid

The hand blender has 5 speed controller at the top of the handle. This is slightly problematic as the controller wheel is positioned at the top of the hand blender. This can be a little awkward when you want to alter speeds but at least with this model you don't have to keep pressure on the power button, as we did with our old one.

There is also a "turbo" button for those moments when you need a sudden short burst of (full) power to zap something rather than a complete pureeing of the food stuff.

The accessories (the basic blender blades, and the bowl and blade) click into place. This is the first point of concern. These accessories need to be solidly clicked into place so the machine will work, however, this can be a problem for older people or people who have difficulty with their hands. My mother has to ask me to connect hers together.

The main shaft of the blender feels solid and isn't as heavy as our previous hand blender.

The manual recommends that you let a hot ingredient cool down before you blame them up or them into the provided beaker. They give a maximum temperature of 80°C, personally I am sure I would like to be splashed by something at 80°C so I would let it cool a little further.

The instruction book recommends that the hand blender is used for fluids, soft ingredients and puréeing cooked ingredients which have been cut into small pieces beforehand.

I would recommend that if you need a larger quantity of an ingredient, such as breadcrumbs, you don't try to zap the full amount in one go but divide it into several smaller portions. Especially if you need to make breadcrumbs, if you try to do more than a fine layer at a time you will find the blades will stick and the engine starts to overheat. The manual recommends 80g but in my experience that is too much - I would suggest about 20g at most at a time and make sure that the bread is dry and a little on the stale side, lightly toast fresh bread if necessary.

It is not just breadcrumbs that can cause it a problem, cheese, nuts and meat in the volumes that the manual states can cause the blades to stop turning - I, personally, only use, at most, half the amount they suggest.

Once you discover how much you can blend there are no other major problems with the hand blender.

It is also possible to get a balloon whisk and a smaller chopping bowl to use with the hand blender, however, you can save yourself some money by purchasing the 1372 version rather than this 1371 version.

The 1372 comes with the shaft, the blender blades, the large blender bowl and blade and the jug, along with a smaller blender bowl and blade and a balloon whisk. If you buy the 1372 version you get all of it for a lot less than I have paid buying the 1371 version and the extras separately.

This is a good hand blender once you discover the quantities it can cope with for yourself. It is very handy when you want a small amount of ingredient(s) rather than getting the larger kitchen blender out of the cupboard and having to clean that for just a handful of breadcrumbs.

Worked well until it broke

I used it for about just over a year and the connector to the chopper got broken inside. While the motor still works well, the chopper blade is not moving at all. Very disappointing indeed. I trusted their big name, but I will never buy a hand blender from Philips.

I bought this blender 1371 as the 1372 wasn't available in my local shop.I have to say I'm really pleased with it. Does the job faaaab.Easy to clean, all the parts can go to dishwasher, ofcourse not the motor one.Defenitely good purchase.X
