The physical design of the hairdryer is rather dull, plain and somewhat like you might expect of an in-room hotel hairdryer, and not a modern hairdryer for personal use. It's outer shell is very basic and white, with drab dollops of grey here and there. However, the plastic shell of the dryer is remarkably sturdy, allowing for safe travel as well as allowing the butterfingers amongst us to drop it without causing any real damage to the item.
It must be said that the hairdryer is in no way more compact than the average modern hairdryer (unlike the `compact design' product description suggests). In fact, it is somewhat larger than the two other hairdryers that we have in the house. However, this does allow the wider nozzle of the dryer to project the hot air across a much larger area, allowing for a quicker drying time, particularly for those with a lot of thick hair.
The special `ionic' function is not just a techy gimmick - it actually works...and surprisingly well. Turning-on the feature does make the drying hair sleeker, with noticeably less frizz. Obviously combined with the right conditioners and products for your hair, this hairdryer really can add a noticeable difference to your hair very easily.
As with many modern hairdryers, this model includes a `cold blast' which is very handy for setting a particular hairstyle when finishing a blow dry. The dryer also comes with a large (but of course) diffuser for creating curly, wavy or `messed up' hair. The size of the diffuser is good for long, thickish hair; allowing the user to bundle a lot of the hair onto the diffuser at the same time. However, users with shorter or very thin hair may struggle to use such a large attachment well.
One noticeable problem with the hairdryer is how hot the standard straight nozzle attachment gets after just a short time of use. If you're using the hairdryer on the go, this is something that you'll have to bear in mind when packing the dryer away after even the shortest of use.
The hairdryer comes with a two year manufacturer's guarantee and a very, very brief instruction manual.
The old one was very good as it came with a comb and two brushes but didn't have a deffuser.
This new hair dryer has a deffuser which really helps when you have long straight hair. It also has a vent attachment (but no brushes). Unlike the Babyliss which has 'toggle' switches this has grey switches that slide up into place.
It is lightweight, has a long 3m cord which is brilliant as it doesn't matter where your plug socket is and dries quickly.
I don't really know how the ion bit works but i use it as it makes my dry, dyed hair feel really soft.
It says it's quiet...to be honest I'm not sure that it's quieter than my other one BUT it is on a different chord/note so it sounds softer & less grating.
I am becoming a bit of a philips fan (with the exception for the razors).
EDIT. I have now used the Philips HP8182/23 2200 Watt SalonDry Control Ceramic IonBoost Hair Dryer Black and Gold and find the white one to be much better to hold and use than the newer gold/black one. I hope this helps :)
However, after using it I thought it wasn't half bad.
It has a few things going for it. It has a nice long electric lead which my last hairdryer did not and therefore I had needed an extension cable just to be able to stand and dry my hair (this is happening too often with electrical appliance nowadays), so this is a definite plus.
I also found that using it on the second heat setting it was nice and gently warm. None of this ear melting heat you get in hair salons.
It has two speed settings and three heat settings, one being cool, as well as a button for a cool shot when using a hotter setting. It also has an `ionic' button. It seems having an `ionic' setting on hair appliances means it is gentler on the hair shafts. It comes with a diffuser which is handy if your hair is medium to long. It also has a directional nozzle.
It is also much quieter than the hairdryer it replaced too.
So, after initially not feeling too impressed, I am quite happy with this hairdryer even if Which? did not rate it very highly. The biggest plus is the gentle heat.
And when all is said and done it dries your hair.
Rather than a sleek slimline model, this is more of a chunky model, but is light and easy to hold and dries quickly.
A lot of mention is the quietness of the dryer. It is quieter than our other dryer.l If you have it on low speed setting, then you can hear the TV and everything else around, it is that quiet. On full blast it is still quieter but unless the TV is on max and the kids have a loud speaker/hailer, then you would not hear them.
Overall, a great little hair dryer and recommended.
