I tend to think of Philips as innovative and of decent quality, but not somewhere to turn for design and high style. How wrong can you be! This tiny MP3 player and radio is essentially a large silver tie clip, with tiny buttons around the sides, but all that's visible is a curved silver plate, with an occasionally flashing LED telling you whether bluetooth is connected.
The sound is excellent, just about as good as I've heard, and the supplied headphones are of pretty reasonable quality too. They are ear canal phones, but come supplied with only 1 size of ear buds which were a little large for my ears. Shame not to give several sizes as most phones manufacturer's do, as everything else was so well thought out.
Those other things include a mini USB cable but also a mains USB charger so you are not tied to your computer - a surprising bonus.
The player manages to fit in a minute display which give a rolling display of whatever's playing. The button pushes to change tracks and skip folders are straightforward, though you can only navigate one folder at a time, so if you have a lot stored on there (and there is also an 8GB model - so a lot of tracks) it could take a time to find what you want.
The design even manages to squeeze in a radio which works surprisingly well. The othe design feature is a bluetooth connection so you can hook it up to your phone and take calls through it (via the headphones which include a mike). This is ingenious, but i'm not sure how useful. I suppose if my phone didn't have an MP3 player and if i didn't want to miss a call... but its an increasingly large number of ifs.
The only real shortcoming is the buttons which are miniscule and fiddly, though never unusably so.Read more ›
I connected it to my laptop and the software installed very easily. Once this has been done it is very easy to upload music. You simply drag the folders you require into the music folder in the GoGear folder and it copies it over easily and quickly.
The sound quality is excellent, very clear and crisp and the headphones provided are much more comfortable and well-fitting than other headphones I've used. It's easy to randomise tracks and I found this the best way to use the player.
All in all, this is a great choice if you want a small, easy to transport MP3 player that will play music clearly. Very good value, especially considering the other features, such as FM radio.
I like the fact Philips made an MP3 player, Radio and Bluetooth Headset all in one tiny and nicely presented package, with a small fabric pouch included for storing both the MP3 Player and headphones, which is a nice addition. A USB plug adapter is also included.
Drag and drop functionality means it's simple to transfer songs to the device, so I didn't bother installing the software (which is stored on the unit itself, along with the full user manual). Folders are also supported which is great. I currently use MediaMonkey on my PC to organize and play songs, so I was very pleased to find that you can drag music files (MP3 or WMA) straight from the MediaMonkey music library window onto the player, a very useful feature that can't be done on my Sony Walkman NWZ-S639FB.
Bluetooth connection to my Nokia N82 was simple to set up and works great. Taking calls is now so much easier when listening to music on the go. The FM Radio works well, with good reception.
Sound quality and output power produced from the player is good, although it's not as good as my Sony Walkman NWZ-S639FB (which in my opinion, is one of the best sounding MP3 players currently available). The included headphones produce good sound, although I'm not a huge fan of ear-canal headphones, as I suffer from delicate and problematic ears.Read more ›
It's a very nice looking piece of kit and we had no problem setting up the bluetooth connection. Putting the music on was easy using Windows - just drag and drop - and my daughter finds it easy to use both as a player and for the 'phone.
I have listened to it myself and the sound quality, both for radio and MP3, is absolutely fine.
In conclusion, this is a product that definitely does what it says it does as well as looking very stylish and being straightforward to set up and use. My only reservation is about the size: best for small hands!
