Fast and powerful ironing

The Philips GC8340/02 steam generator has 2400 watts of power and up to five bars of steam pressure for fast ironing, so you can double your ironing speed. Pressurised steam penetrates deep into fabrics, making your ironing fast and easy, even on difficult fabrics. The iron features continuous steam output of up to 120g/minute thanks to the small amounts of water that are pumped into the boiler at a time, for perfect and fast crease removal. It also features up to 210g/minute steam boost for tough wrinkle removal so you can tackle even the most stubborn creases, and vertical steam for crease removal in hanging fabrics. The iron has variable steam settings and only takes two minutes to heat up until it's ready to use.

Steam tip for hard-to-reach areas

The Philips GC8340/02 steam generator's steam tip with elongated steam slots ensures that steam easily reaches into all those tricky places such as pockets, button areas and small parts of children’s clothes.

Endless, powerful steam with 1.4 litre water tank

To make ironing effortless, you need a lot of steam. But high steam output usually means a lot of refilling. An extra-large water tank reduces the need for refilling. Thanks to this iron's huge 1.4 litre water tank, you can iron for up to three hours without having to refill. The water tank is detachable so it's easy to fill under the tap or empty into the sink. This iron is suitable for use with tap water.

Comfortable ironing

This lightweight ironing system is comfortable and easy to use. It features Philips' premium soleplate SteamGlide, which is scratch-resistant, easy to clean and offers perfect gliding on all types of fabric. The iron has a 1.7m hose with 180 degree swivel cord freedom and a hose clip for neat and compact storage. It only weighs 1.2kg, making ironing easy and effortless for everyone.

Easy de-calc

Permanent anti-calc tablets inside the iron delay the formation of scale build-up, ensuring better protection for your Philips ironing system. The clever iron also reminds you when it's time to perform a calc clean.

Reduce energy consumption

By selecting the GC8340/02's eco setting, the most energy-efficient way to obtain perfect ironing results, you save 20% energy and 40% water consumption. So you can reduce your energy bills and do your bit to help protect the environment while you save time and effort with your ironing.

I am reviewing this product as it was supplied to me by an Philips authorised repair centre after the previous Philips steam generator (GC8220) stopped working due to a failed steam control valve in the steam generator 'base' unit. The original unit lasted four years, which I feel is too short when it originally cost ~£240. Traditional irons have lasted me typically 5-10 years in the past. Philips sold me a current equivalent (the GC8340 modern reviewed here) for £100, a discount of 50% of the current cost at the time.

The replacement unit (GC8340) has lasted less than a year before it too has stopped working due to (what I assess to be ) a failed steam control valve again. Steam is being continuously produced at the soleplate of the iron, and no amount of use of the 'trigger' on the iron will stop it. The normal and easily audible 'click' in the base unit of the steam generator can no longer be heard when the trigger is pressed. I am returning it to the repair centre for a full refund and will buy another brand this time.

In my experience, Philips steam generator irons have a short lifespan and are expensive as a result. The purchase price is equivalent to buying 1-3 traditional irons a year, and throwing them in the bin after a few months use.

    You have been warned !!

i needed a new iron and had read previous reviews about phillips steam generators, albeit different models and everyone was raving about them. i too can confirm that this iron is brilliant. it cuts through creases and easily cuts ironing time down by at least 50 per cent.
it is a bit noisy, i suspect that all steam generators are a bit nosier than normal steam irons but the time saved doing the ironing more than makes up for this minor inconvenience.
it isnt too bulky and heats up quickly. i have also ordered a new ironing board but at present am using my old £15 ironing board and it works totally fine however the there is a bit of a puddle on the floor after a big ironing session. overtime i think that the moisture trapped in the material in my old ironing board may begin to smell after a while (hence my decision to go with a specially designed ironing board)
the initial outlay does seem a bit extravagant but so far i can confirm that it is worth everypenny!

I read the info and, in particular, I read what Which? had to say about this steam generator. They were very complimentary and they were right to be so.
The steamer/iron has performed really well. Even linen and fleecies respond to it.
Believe me, I'm relieved. Both the good lady who does most of my ironing and my wife think it is great. Since I recommended it and bought it, you can imagine my satisfaction/smugness/delight that I got it right. Oh, and so did Philips.

I am now on my fourth steam generator having previously used Tefal. I absolutely love steam generators and they are worth every penny compared to normal irons, however they only seem to last me a couple of years before something goes wrong. Having gone through the cost and inconvenience of having to send it off for repair with Tefals i thought id try a different make and see if they were as good. I spent a lot of time researching and eventually chose the philips 8340. Yes it was smaller and doesnt have the modcons of the tefals but i thought it was worth a try. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks i noticed that water seemed to leak from the base. This was fine initially but quickly turned into needing to place a teatowel under the base otherwise my table would have a pool of water. The iron itself worked fine and did what it was supposed to do so i didnt bother taking it back. However just before christmas the tea towel was now saturated after every session of ironing and i wouldve needed to start using bathtowels to stop the problem so i decided to return it. Lucky for me Currys didnt have a replacement in stock so i was able to choose a different model with the credit. I quickly did a price comparison and found that another Philips Model, Perfectcare 9230 was available. I was a bit hesitant about taking another Philips and was tempted to get another Tefal but unfortunately they were not on offer. However this iron is superb and i cannot find fault with it. The strange thing is that it does not have a temperature gauge to adjust. Somehow it works. I have tried ironing a linen shirt followed by a tshirt that would normally burn if it wasnt on cold and it works perfectly. Also no black marks have appeared on the soleplate where ive ironed something too hot. ITS MAGIC. So do yourself a favour and go buy a Philips Perfectcare 9230 its amazing.

Ours gave up for the 1st time because of over heating and el problems just before the two years warranty expired. Had to sent it to Philips for repair, not a replacement, and were left with no iron for some time. Just now, only three years since purchase and domestic use the same has happed again - over heating, hot cable, spitting hot stem and water, tripping fuses in the whole house.

This product is a replacement for an original product, both products have not been fit for purpose as when it states it needs to be descaled for the first time even when you carry out the procedure as stated in the product guidelines the steam function ceases to work. This is the identical problem we had with the first model OBVIOUSLY a product malfunction yet Philips and Amazon continue to stock it.
To make matters worse I am 16 days over the 30 days Amazon returns policy so now I have to try and get my money back from Philips anyone like to give me my chances on that front?

So in summary companies continue to manufacture, sell and replace products when it is obvious there is a problem I will be seriously reviewing which companies I buy from in the future especially those who give the minimal period to assist you and then leave you high and dry.
