design, a small LED light and a charging cable. After a ten-hour charge we all had
a play at turning the light on and off (by tilting the cup) and watched the LED
flicker ... wow!
But when it came to bedtime it really comes in to its own. My three-year-old is
not keen on the dark, and although we have night lights she was really taken with
the flickering candle effect; in a dimmed room it really does look like a candle.
Not only did it help my daughter drop off to sleep; it nearly caught me too!
It's charged via a short USB cable with a small round pin connector in the cup.
I'd rather have seen a micro USB connector at the cup end because then it could
be charged with a phone charger, as it is, it needs connecting to a computer or
other similar device which can be a bit of a nuisance. I found an old phone
charger with the right size pin and so I can now charge the light without having
to cart it off downstairs to the computer.
So overall I think it's really rather a lovely addition to a young girl's bedroom.
It's a plasticky-looking little tube with a sweet drawing of Snow White on one side. It looks a little cheap, but then it is cheap, so that's to be expected! To turn it on or off you just tilt it (quite a long way) to the side. When on, it gives a soft yellow light that flickers slightly like a candle flame would. It's not enough light to illuminate a room or to read by, but the benefit of that is that it's not bright enough to stop a child from sleeping whilst it's on, and it provides a nice atmosphere.
If you use this as a nightlight it will need to be charged every day, which you can do with the USB cord via a computer, laptop or USB plug. There's no indication that the candle has finished charging, which is a bit of an oversight, especially as the leaflet recommends a ten-hour charge which is quite a lot to be doing every day! Presumably it doesn't always take this long to fully charge, but there's no way to know. I also found that the light kept turning itself on during charging, despite not being touched or tilted, which was a bit annoying. It also occasionally turned itself on when not being charged!
This is a sweet product but I think it could be improved by sorting out the charging issues and making it less likely to randomly switch on. It does make a nice, good value gift for a little girl though.
As a parent, however, it has not been nearly as successful as I had hoped it would be. One of the reasons for this is because of the fact that it completely stopped working after the first week. My husband had to literally take the light apart, which is not something that you are meant to do. It started to work again after that, so I presume there had been a loose connection somewhere.
Secondly, the light is so low that my daughter still needs a nightlight left on. This means that it doesn't achieve what many parents would be hoping that it would do - to take the edge off of the dark and help a young child to settle themselves back to sleep without being scared of the dark.
As such, I have such mixed feelings about what to award this product. On the one hand it does create light - albeit quite a low quality of light. On the other hand, it is delightfully girly and a definite winner with my daughter. For this reason I have given it the traditional 'sitting on the fence' award of three out of five.
Your child will love the look, but is it going to achieve what you hope it will? Ask yourself these basic questions before making your decision.
Once charged the light will last all night, perfect for little ones. To turn the light on all you have to do is to tilt the glass to one side and hey presto, the light goes on - you switch it off the same way.
On the negative side, there is no way to discover if the candle is fully charged - perhaps some sort of red/green light could have helped, but this is just me being picky and not worth taking any stars from this useful and safe nightlight.
Kids will love it.
It's basically a small plastic cup with a tiny Led light in the base. It comes with a charge lead so it can be plugged into a computer and charged to keep it going. To turn it on you just turn it on its side and back up again or you can shake it like my niece did and that seems to work just as well. I'm not sure how long it will last because it feels fairly flimsy but it makes a sweet nightlight and without too much rough treatment should last a while.
