The same thing has happened every time in the past. I give it two to three months and then I am back to a disposable razor that can shave closer, with less hassle, and less irritation. The number one reason each time for going back to a disposable was how the electric shaver failed to handle my neck hair. None of them seemed to be able to the job no matter what and then the hassle on the units I had that had an expensive cleaning unit made it a pain to use.
Well I got the bug again to try an electric razor one more time and ended up purchasing this unit. And now after having it for a while I have to say that this is the best electric shaver that I have had. First and foremost it can handle my neck. It can't get it all in one pass, but the others couldn't do it no matter how many times I tried! Second, being able to just rinse the head under the sink is wonderful. No more cleaning systems that are bulky and expensive with the continual cost of the cleaning solution. Third, is that it is a surprisingly close shave. I kind of expected a 5 o'clock shadow by noon with a rotary shaver, but that isn't the case here. It is very close to a shave with a razor, NO KIDDING!
It isn't the perfect electric razor, but it is more than worth the price. There are only two things that stick out with me that could have been done better and both are related to charging. First, it takes 8 hours to charge the unit from being almost dead, with no quick charge capabilities. You can get around it by just using it plugged in when you are in the middle of the charge. Second, is that there is no battery level indicator. It would be nice to have some sort of idea of how much of a charge you have left.
In my book, these are just two minor issues that aren't that important to me, but keep me from giving it 5 stars. I have and will continue to recommend this unit to friends.
Electric shavers are never as good as traditional razors. Before I had a beard full-time I inevitably kept switching back to a normal razor because it really does shave smoother, closer to the skin, and generally faster. That said, electric razors do feel like less work and less mess (though likely with more razor burn).
This electric razor fits nicely in the hand, is fairly maneuverable with the three heads, and holds a decent charge. I use it predominantly on my neck and upper cheeks (around my beard) but have used it for full facial shaving in the past. It has done a good job of shaving hair, though you may need to do more than one pass and at different angles to get all the hairs.
Overall I was relatively satisfied with this shaver and it suited my needs. You can give this one a try with reasonable confidence, but it might not hurt to shop around and see what else is out there.
I've been using Norelco shavers for 40 years. This shaver is both better and worse than their older shavers. The actual shaving performance is much better. I have an older plug-in Norelco shaver, and, while shaving, I have to rub my face a couple times with a hot washcloth to raise my whiskers. I don't have to raise my whiskers with this new shaver, meaning that I can shave my face dry and get a close shave. In fact, the shave is so close that it leaves my skin a little sore. (In actual practice, I still drag a hot, moist washcloth across my face to make sure all my whiskers are raised.) This shaver is also very quiet, so it doesn't hurt my ears.
On the down side, the trimmer doesn't work as well as the plug-in shaver that I already own. It doesn't take hair off as well, and it doesn't stand out at a far enough angle. Also, the shaver part will sometimes pull long hairs instead of cutting them off, and that can be painful. In my opinion, both the trimmer performance and the tendency to pull hairs is due to this being a battery-operated shaver, meaning that the cutters don't have as much power behind them as a plug-in shaver. Plug-in shavers have more robust performance, but they are louder.
I can't tell you how many shaves the charge is good for because I shave every 5 days. I get three shaves out a charge, but then I shave much longer than if I were shaving every day. If the shaver loses it charge during a shave, you'll have to plug it in and wait five minutes for it to charge slightly before continuing. You then have to complete your shave with the plug in. One good thing is that Norelco shavers now come with straight cords instead of a coiled cords. The coiled cords were a nuisance.
I have some concerns about the on/off button. It is one of those soft, molded plastic buttons that deforms when you push it (instead of a normal mechanical switch). My experience with such buttons is that the plastic eventually fatigues and cracks. I doubt it will last as long as the rest of the shaver lasts.
In short: great shaving performance, so-so pop-up trimmer, environmentally unfriendly packaging.
