I had been looking at the Philips 9002 Oled.. but I’m still not sold on tech that has inherent screen burn issues that companies refuse to cover with warranty. For well over a grand that’s simply an investment I decided I wasn’t willing to make.
So when I checked the rest of this years Philips lineup and saw that the PUS7303 series used a Direct Lit LED panel .. not only that, but it’s VA too (vertical alignment) as opposed to IPS (In Plane Switching) .. I was very excited.
In short, Direct Lit LED panels have the screen lights behind and across the entire screen.. this means you get far superior blacks and conformity of image. As opposed to the cheaper and far more common Edge Lit panels of today where the screen is Lit from lights around the edges... this causes lots of issues, such as light leaks and clouding around the edges of the screen. Also far worse blacks in the images.
The fact it’s a VA panel also means that again, the contrasts are far superior to an IPS panel which are far more common. However this does mean that you lose colour quality if viewing at acute angles (from the side, this doesn’t happen with IPS panels).
However, anyone who watches a TV from the side... we’ll... who does that?!
Direct and Center, the Direct-Lit / VA combo delivers astounding blacks and colour contrast. Absolutely zero clouding or other bad uniformity issues here.
Paired with the Philips Local dimming tech and the powerful P5 chip inside and this set is probably the closest you’re going to get to Oled without actually buying Oled.
And because it’s LED/LCD... you needn’t worry about image retention as you would the Oled.
Yes, the Android has some issues.. Philips have updates on the way to rectify these and hopefully streamline usability.
The remote is solid and also requires updates itself as it runs the Google voice assistant. It has a full query keyboard on the underside to save time inputting information.
Inbuilt Netflix button and Amazon instant/Prime video installed already, alongside BBC iPlayer and other smart TV apps like Youtube etc.
On bank holiday this set was reduced from £700 to around £500...
Couldn’t resist... that’s the deal of the century for a 50” TV with this much going for it.
The three sided ambilight is the icing on the cake.
If you’ve never experienced ambilight. It’s Philips patented party trick.
Tiny but powerful inbuilt led lights run along the top and sides of the rear of the set. Set to “follow video” and they immediately and in real time analise what’s on screen (closest to the edges) and they paint that particular shade of colour on the wall behind.
Sounds gimmicky... maybe it is. But put it this way, once I had an ambilight TV.. watching a TV without it... just seemed hugely lacking.
It actually enhances the viewing experience and removes the limitations of the screen size by extending the visual experience around the TV whilst acting as bias lighting to reduce eye strain.
It can be turned off... or set to a single steady colour.. or set to follow audio.. or set to rotate through pre programmed colour hues.
It can even be linked (through Philips Home Hue Hub - sold separately... in conjunction with Philips hue bulbs... also sold separately) so that every Philips hue bulb talks to the ambilight and replicates the colours from the screen around your home.
There’s examples of this on YouTube.
Seriously. Top, top TV. Great value. Incredible image quality. Don’t even hesitate.
Now I have the second one about a month and the Apps don’t freeze but the HDMI issue remains, so I get up and restart the TV and HDMI comes back to life. I have searched on the web and found other Philips TVs give the same issue.
Send back or live with (I have chosen to live with, perhaps may get fixed with an update, I hope)
Picture quality from Sky HD, PS4 and Internal apps is very good, just wish I had a theatre sized screen, as those black bars of wasted screen do bug me when watching films, but fine on SKY HD, the wife can watch Casualty happy and I do watch a lot of TV Series from my Plex server.
That ambient light feature did not make it past day 1, don’t like it, that will be a personal preference of people, but I don’t live in a night club and don’t need it.
In conclusion, nice design, respectable picture but please Philips fix your software, so if the HDMI is blank, refresh to make sure its blank.
There is nothing not to like. Fast processor certainly compared to the Sony Android I have. 4k is beautiful. Ambilight is clever and interesting. Probably not amazing but that said I like having it and it's definitely not a disadvantage. It can be switched off regardless.
Side loading difficult. Get ES File Explorer. Install FireDL and well the world is your oyster with this set then.
I'd have preferred it if it came with the ITV Hub but I have that on the Kodi App so it's not a biggie. Definitely would be a truly amazing set though if it were factory installed alongside the BBC I Player.
In a nutshell, this is a computer with a TV on it. If you are technically minded you'll love it. If you aren't it's still great value anyhow and once you learn a little about it's true potential you'll never buy a bog standard TV again. Some warehouse deals at £470 ish are a bargain. Grab one.
