It seemed an effort to read at times as I felt the story often just plodded along & I was losing interest.
I really loved some of the descriptive narrative about "The Ancient One" & highlighted some brilliant passages that did keep me reading. Would recommend 'Phantoms' as a good read to fill a quiet & rainy weekend but not a book to save for reading as a main attraction regardless how busy or quiet your weekend is, weather permitting.
Interesting theory & story line that produced some amazing passages that I found thought provoking & it did make me question certain beliefs & preconceived notions I held on several topics Mr Koontz entwined very successfully & factual content is well researched & documented.
Do as I did - read 'Phantoms' & don't just write it off.
After reading a lot of 'one-off' Koontz novels back in the day, I read the Odd series (then the Frankenstein series) in sequence over the past couple of years. I really liked those two series so decided to revisit a couple of my earlier favourites and picked this and 'Servants Of Twilight'. Yes, I still have the paperbacks, but I'm increasingly reading on a large screen e-reader these days due to my ageing eyesight, so I dropped the paperbacks at a charity shop and bought Phantoms for my Kindle reader.
After that intro, you probably don't need me to tell you I liked it again. Yes, its not as good as Odd or Frankenstein. Yes, as others have noted, its very 'Unknowable Cosmic Eldritch Horror', but nothing wrong with that ................. and, yes, I still like it.
And the electronic formatting is fine.
Very well written book and had me on the edge of my seat during many chapters. Phantoms definitely falls under the horror section for me and had me near scared to turn off the lights when going to bed. I have a very imaginative mind and this definitely made it go into over drive.
Having downloaded Phantoms, I discovered it was first published years ago.
Not one of his better books; I skipped loads of it because it was un-necessarily descriptive while adding nothing to the story or the plot,
Happily, he's improved 100-fold since this was published.
And I couldn't help but draw some comparisons with Stephen King's 'It'.
Although I think that Phantoms was published first.....
