REVIEWED VERSION: 2006 Anchor Bay UK DVD

Director: Don Coscarelli

Cast: Reggie Bannister, Angus Scrimm, James Le Gros, Paula Irvine, Samantha Phillips, Kenneth Tigar

SYNOPSIS

Mike (James Le Gros) had been committed to a psychiatric hospital since the events of PHANTASM. Jody is dead - according to the "official" report a car accident - nobody believes Mike it was the Tall Man.
Mike decides to tell the psychiatrist exactly what he wants to hear - and gets released.
Found by Reggie (Reggie Bannister) digging up graves that turn up empty, he is convinced to join Reggie at his house for a family dinner.
When they approach Reggie's place, his house explodes - courtesy of the Tall Man - killing everyone inside.
Thus, Reggie and Mike go on a roadtrip to seek, find and destroy the Tall Man.

THE PROS & CONS

After the low-budget success of PHANTASM a studio finally saw the potential of the PHANTASM series and decided to pick it up and fund it. Unfortunately they demanded some changes in the cast, resulting in Michael Baldwin being replaced with James Le Gros. Bill Thornbury is also absent in this part. A perfect example for why studios and producers should be stripped of any say so in the movies' creative procedure (including casting). I liked PHANTASM 2 a lot - but it would have been A LOT better if A. Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury had actually reprised their roles.
This time the story focuses on Mike and Reggie who set out to hunt down the Tall Man. I liked PHANTASM II a bit better than its predecessor for several reasons: the pacing has picked up considerably - we're past the introductions - the whole setting is darker and eerier, it has a more morbid atmosphere, several new ideas.

Don Coscarelli is back with the second of his four phantasm movies, great strong sequel that's as fun as the original with plenty of horror action, Mike now is grown up (played now by a different actor) and has just been released from a psychiatric hospital, he was made to believe it was all in his head, but he knows the truth and once released goes once again in the search of the tall man with his old friend Reggie (played once again by Reggie Bannister) together they search graveyards in search of the tall man to destroy him and his minions, the balls are back of course causing bloody mayhem which is one of the signature things about the movies, the cast is all good, more females this time too and the brilliant Angus Scrimm is back as the creepy tall man, the ending once again like the original is rather predictable and of course leads straight into part 3, this is all great fun horror and really worth checking out, certainly the phantasm movie are better than most horror sagas from the 70's & 80's.

97-mins, 1988.

This is a fantastic follow up to the original Phantasm movie which was for it's day a tip-top horror flick - witty, original script with a genuinely scary plot.
This movie is quite the opposite, so why do I give it 4 stars? Well, the plot is so-so, the acting slightly better and the dialogue only marginally better however the movie compensates for this with it's superb visual style. I have yet to come across a modern day horror film that scares in such a startling way like this one. The way in which each scene is shot keeps the viewer on edge (Sam Raimi to thank for that one) - no cheezy zombies or silly scenes - just no-nonsense suspense & scare.
The visual photography of the flying spheres is seen best in this Phantasm film & the creepy dwarfs are very creepy indeed.
Buy this film but please aviod the thrid installment.

This is the second installment in the Phantasm series written and directed by Don Coscarelli. Part 2 has always been my favorite since it is action-packed, has plenty of gore and an overall lighter mood than the other parts. This is basically an action movie where the good guys go after the tall man using all kinds of groovy home made weapons. This movie seems a bit inspired by Evil Dead 2 with the many one-liners and action sequences. Overall a great movie with good acting, efx and pace.
The DVD release itself is somewhat of a let down. First of all, the movie is presented in full screen and not the original aspect ratio. Secondly, the encoding is not great and this release looks no better than the old Universal laserdisc from 1988. When will DVD companies learn that the minimum the DVD consumers require is original aspect ratio and proper encoding...
Wait for the R1 release which will be widescreen and have a better picture quality at least.

This is My Favourite of the series. The Budget is much Larger than the first and the Effects work is simply Stunning. It has A Brilliant Premise and brings all the major Characters Back for another round with theTallman and Ahem!....His Balls.
