Yet again Petzl have hit the mark with their headtorches. The Tika XP2 is an LED torch that takes three AAA batteries. It is lightweight, with the batteries housed along with the lamp so there is no battery pack at the back of your head.

The elastic headheadstrap is easily adjustable and features a neat little built-in signal whistle, a nice addition.

The main white LED lamp has three outputs, first push of the button gives you maximum mode at 60 lumens, though this maximum output will fade with use as the LED is not regulated. Second push gives you a lower light, about 15 lumens and third push gives you a flashing strobe at maximum output.

Holding down the button switches to a smaller, red colured LED, first up is a steady red light, perfect for night time map reading and preserving your night vision, second press gives you a flashing red. All modes have their place and the steady state lights are augmented by a slide up lens which transforms the beam from spot to wide angle. This is a very handy feature, I wear the Tika when hiking at night and dependent on conditions either the maximum or economy white light with the wide angle lens in place gives me enough ambient light to walk around quite happily, if I need to pick out a distant feature the wide angle lens is flipped down and the spot gives good penetration to maybe a hundred metres.

If I was forced to level at criticism it would be the lumen output of the lamp, I am sure it could be boosted to twice its current level with little to no issue with battery life. Apart from that it is a handy little torch.

Oh, and by the way this does take lithium batteries which is a total godsend, you can load the torch with lithiums and leave it in a backpack out in the cold and it will work fine, try that with alkalines and see how far it gets you!

Nice little torch for the price.

Bought this as part of the National 3 Peaks was conducted at 2am in the dark. I was the only person in the group who forked out the extra cash for the Petzel but this toch was by far the best of the 9 man team. Brightest light, best looking, best fit, most functions and longest range. What more can i say - you get what you pay for! Coupled with the pouch its should last for years!

Some time ago we bought two of these torches. To be used for geocaching as well as for walking the dog. However we were so smitten with them we were loath to use them in the constant falling rain. They are water resistant but not waterproof. So we decided to get their little brother as well for rainy conditions. The tikkina. So we have two of those torches and two of this product. Mad I know but when you find a product as wonderful as these its hard to put it in harms way. Though the price is very reasonable we wanted to look after it well. The Tikkina is a wonderful product as well and has only two LED's which shine far enough to light up woodland for many meters but this version really blazes away. Have compared it to a Lensa/Lenser product and they dont seem to offer anything better for the price. I would choose these every time. In fact to keep my dad safe when he asked for a rechargeable torch we bought him one of these for Christmas 2012. And we then bought the rechargeable NiMh batteries from Amazon as well via 7 day shop. Although the batteries are supplied with this product, to get you going eventually they will run out. Saying that we bought ours back in March and although constantly used they have not dimmed at all. Nothing says trust of a product than when you buy one for your parents to keep them safe. It has 5 Settings. Full beam and reduced beam and strobe on white light and two settings on red lighting. Unlike the Tikkina it has a power LED. One of those extremely bright large LED circuits. The red lighting feature really saves battery life and enables you to see well enough to walk in total darkness in woodland/moors etc. It also incorporates a diffuser screen which softens the light if in a tent. The batteries are securely held as well.Read more ›

Compact, lightweight, tough and powerfull. Cant ask for much more than that. Its a great little torch with lots of features and a good design. Rated IPX4 meaning Ingress-Protection under EN 60529 (Euro-Norm) certified to withstand continuous splashing water (solid particle ingress not specified) so it can withstand even heavy rain.
Well worth the price-tag.

Bought this for the Mighty Deerstalker (a 10k-and-a-bit trail run at night in Scotland) and it performed admirably.
It survived river crossings, snow, mud, scree and there is barely a mark on it (I wish I could say the same for me).

It is easily bright enough for any walking or running needs (I haven't tried cycling so I can't comment on that), and was very comfortable and easily adjustable. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a head torch.

This head torch is well made and sits comfortably on your head.

The way in which you use only one switch to change between the full power and dimmed light works incredibly well. And the fact that you can then switch to 'red mode' (ie the light is red) is incredibly easy too.

The sliding diffuser works well too.

So all in all you have a very adaptable and reliable little torch.
