After trying various head torches in work , Which did not quite fit the bill. Either bright long distance and not very good at close work or good for close and no good for long. Decided to plumb for this one,for these reasons. 1 good brand if its good enough for potholing it should do for me.2 build quality the ABS plastic should take some hammer.3 It is intrinsically safe so can be used in confined spaces in which i do have to work. Haven't used in work yet but the different settings seem about right. Will update when i use in anger. Used now for year and still pleased, mostly in work and found it waterproof even in excessive conditions. Battery life is ok, used lithium to keep the weight down . quite pleased with beam settings and work well in most situations.

Robust and WATERPROOF. Lots of other head torches are only water resistant and this one has the added bonus that with alkaline cells it is also certified safe in explosive atmospheres, eg. where it says "No naked lights". You might never need it but, should there be a gas leak this torch is safe. It is a bit chunky, but solid and the battery compartment lid opens with a positive catch, rubber seals and is captive, so no chance of losing it if you need to change batteries in a difficult place when out on the mountains. The rechargeable battery life is quite reasonable on the lowest brightness setting and a good wide spread at five to seven metres when walking or doing jobs. Some head torches are very long range with an eye crossing hot spot close to, but I want to concentrate on my feet or hands if walking, working or climbing, not 200 feet away. The high beam is more than adequate for a long range view and the large, rubber covered, rotary switch gives a prompt return to closer distances, no tiny awkward buttons to hold down for a change of luminence levels. Should your battery run low you get a warning couple of blinks and reduced brightness, but not total cut off as with some makes of lamp. The unit uses two AA cells which I find more convenient than the often required three as most batteries, rechargeable or alkaline, are sold in packs of twos or fours.

Am i the only one who doesn't think this is at all bulky??
It's the size of most lamps, except there is no extra battery pack to carry on the back of the strap/helmet.

This has utterly replaced Petzl Duos in my book, it's robust, reliable and fairly cheap
The beam produced by the LEDs are uniform, wide and a nice white colour. It's battery hasn't died on me yet in a cave or in general use, and i carry 4 spare AA's which is now 2 sets for this lamp instead of 1 spare set for a Duo, so i gain 12 hours of light.

You should buy one.

This is a professional bit of kit - you can get the cheaper ones that Petzl do but by comparison they look like jewellery! Fully waterproof and with 3 different beam modes for walking/close up work, feels very tough so you can throw it in your bag without fear of it breaking. Like a lot of Petzl stuff it has a "reserve" mode to give you around 20 minutes of dimmed light before it dies completely - which I'm hoping not to need!

Seems expensive for what it is (44 paid)

It is nicely made, chunky, robust feeling. And to counter other comments, I found the beam very uniform. The twin beam mode is very nice for close work.

Possibly better in a cave where you have become dark adapted, but when used direct after walking out of a house, it does not seem all that bright per se.

The money I presume goes on the fact that it will still be working in 5 years time. But out of the box, it feels pricey for what you get.

This is a big, chunky head lamp but it's not heavy. It is exceptionally robust and well engineered. The switch is a simple three-position switch that can be readily operated with gloves. When stowed the lamp faces back on itself and locks the switch at the same time. This both protects the lamp and prevents accidental turn-on.

The behaviour on power loss is well designed - the light is reduced to a usable but dim 'reserve' level which lasts several hours, whilst displaying a red warning light. Rated run times are for alkaline batteries, I get about twice that on low-self-discharge NiMH rechargeables.

I use it for my work as a veterinary surgeon. The Petzl pixa puch is a useful extra and would strongly advise buying at the same time. you don't usually go round everywhere with the head torch on your head so this makes it nice to carry around and protects it very well.

Not used much yet as it's summer. It does what I expected. I didn't have the spread beam in my last one and the spread beam is so useful when running in the woods on a rough path.
