Because of the complexity of cars these days, there is not so much you can/should do DIY on your vehicle. I used to get Haynes manuals for cars 30 years ago - when you needed to change the points, etc. Now alas with service indicators that need resetting, electronic control of this and that, I'm afraid service/repair at main dealers is the norm. So why did I buy a Haynes manual? Well, we have four cars (Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Ford), and all go for [annual] servicing or repair at main dealers to keep service history, etc. But I have purchased Haynes manuals for each (where available) for one good reason, there are a few tasks you can still do at home (DIY), like change a light bulb. Do you really want to pay an hours labour (£44+) to replace a bulb say). What you don't want to do it break anything trying to get trim off etc, to get at the bulb (I've done it, and it can cost eye watering amounts to buy what seems like a small part you've just broken the fixing lugs off). So, what you would attempt to do DIY on a newish car is less now than when I started driving 30+ years ago (I changed head gaskets, etc. using Haynes Manuals in the past, but I would try nowdays on a new turbo/supercharged engine). With this in mind, Haynes manuals have changed accordingly. There are definately less jobs you can do at home (need specialist tools for a lot of jobs), but these manuals show you enough to do a number of jobs yourself at home. Manual has clear instructions, with photograhs.

So in conclusion, I guess recommended. If you are going to do anything on your vehicle, you should buy a Haynes Manual - it will pay for itself, as it will save you damaging/breaking anything in the process of DIY repairs. Who else makes a DIY manuals to rival Haynes?

Packed full of information and clearly set out as expected from Haynes. If you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself, you at least know what should be done in a service and the questions to ask. You don't feel ignorant and the garage can see you know what's what and may even have a good diagnosis of a fault for them to work on.
Would like to have seen a potted history of the model and engines, but not strictly needed. But with all the research that went into producing the book, surely more background must be around.

.I have been repairing my cars at home for many years and have always had a Haynes Manual to go with each car. I thought they were great. Sadly it is much more difficult to repair cars at home now and I think the manual reflects this. There used to be lots of technical details but now they tend to stick the most basic procedures. Nevertheless the information and help given remains clear, concise and excellent.

Easy to use, clear well written, standard Haynes.
I'm a tight wad and refuse to pay main dealer prices on an out of warranty car, I also like playing with my spanners. Keeps me out of my wife's hair.

This book follows in the Haynes Tradition and gives advice for the home car mechanic. Unfortunately, nowadays with the complexity involved in modern cars the reader is advised on many occasions to take the car to the dealer's workshop which some of us cannot afford!

They say Haynes are getting more simpler compared to their past work shop manuals. This one is ok for having as a reference, but does not cover certain items in depth. If Bentley made one for a diesel model, then this would be made redundant.

I knew before ordering that this manual covered the previous model BMW 1-series to our car.
Nevertheless, some parts are similar and it will still be useful.

Haynes the Car Manual People, they have the monopoly and it's a useful reference even if your car is still under warranty and cared for by your local BMW dealer.
