Our cat soon learnt to stick her paw up the spout wiggle it and sone food would drop out. A brilliant idea but product needs a redesign to be made 'cat proof'.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is the third auto-feeder that I've owned and I've got to say it's the best. We used to have a clockwork, four-portion model which was unreliable, then a large dispenser which had possibly the worst user interface I've ever come across. We tend to use these for weekends away; it's not worth taking the cat to the cattery, but any longer and fresh water would be a problem.

This model is simple - and contrary to other reviews, it is neither unwieldy nor ugly. It assembles in a very predictable manner: the food tray slots in where you'd expect it to; the large bowl fits on top of the dispenser. I found it easy to fit the batteries (size D, not included unfortunately - adds another £10 or so onto the expense of purchase) but one small screw later and they're in. I didn't find the threading flimsy, again, contrary to other reviews.

The time is really easy to set; you press the enter button once, then the up and down buttons to select hours and minutes. There are three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) shown on the readout, and by holding down enter for two seconds or more, you can set these - again, using the up and down buttons and enter button. You have the option to turn any of these three meals on or off (i.e. the unit can dispense between one and three meals per day) and you can vary the meal size considerably (I believe it uses American cups as a unit of measurement) - I'd encourage testing first to make sure your cat is getting enough; the lowest increment wouldn't be enough for my hungry kitty!

It's really simply and really easy to use. I think that with some ingenuity, a cat could manipulate the feeder into dispensing more - the rotating platform which controls portion size is not as sturdy as some, but it'd take some doing. Not, in my opinion, a negative point on the review, but cats are ingenious. Finally, after some experimentation, it works just as well as a sweet dispenser!

Please see the picture I've added. This product was a waste of money, purely because my cats could access the biscuits whenever they wanted. All they did was stick their paw up and it all came falling down. If I was rich it would've been so funny, but I've just wasted money with this product after searching high and low. Even when I accidentally knocked it with my knee, biscuits came falling down. It's not robust enough at all and because the biscuits are held up by a flap, the cats can smell the goodies up there and continue to poke until more fall out. If you have well behaved cats who aren't remotely curious then this is a good buy as the timer is great and amounts perfect. I narrowed the gap to the biscuits by applying a plastic shield (from a fizzy pop bottle) which I had to superglue on and that ended up working better.

The Petmate Portion Right Programmable Pet Feeder doesn't quite live up to it's name, owing to unreliable portion sizes. The unit is of plastic construction and feels for the most part sturdy enough to cope with the kind of knocks and bumps a cat or small dog might inflict upon it. However it does not have a high quality feel, say for instance, like a decent coffee machine. Rather it feels a little more like a cheap blender, though heavier.

The digital display is clear and the user interface is easy to get used to. Imagine a modern central heating system digital interface. It's a lot like that. It doles out up to three meals a day at three different portion sizes. The portion sizes are shown as three bars on the screen. Three bars equals the largest portion, one the smallest. The smallest portion on average is about one good handful or 50g of dry cat food. I'm sorry to say I haven't tested the larger portion sizes for weight but they look like double and triple the size of the smallest portion. The portion size is physically controlled by the feed mechanism. This is in the form of a paddle (think paddle boat steamer) broken into three. Select one bar for a meal size, and only one third of the paddle will turn. More on that later. Each meal can be programmed for a specific time over the course of 24 hours, or can be skipped. It does not have daily programming - every day is the same. Meals can not be skipped on the fly, say by switching the unit off and back on again after the meal time has passed, as this will delete your meal schedule. In order to skip a single meal, you must change the schedule and then change it back. This is a little inconvenient, especially considering the unit is likely sat on the floor.

The unit is powered by three D sized batteries.

I like the concept of this but it just doesn't work well. The first one we received was faulty - the screen didn't display fully so it was v difficult to program. This was replaced swiftly. So take two: We were away for a week and set it to feed twice a day. We trialled it for a couple of days first to check. The smallest set portion is still quite large - more than I would normally feed him for a meal (15g). However the portion doesn't always deliver correctly - one morning he got just 4 biscuits - a very unhappy puss! We were not confident the feeder would feed our cat properly so we still had someone come in to feed him, and am pleased we did. When we came home we found the eating tray had moved a little and there was a large pile of biscuits down the back of the bowl underneath the main machine - my poor cat had obviously been swindled in a few of his meals! It is clever - the programming is easy to do and you can do up to 3 meals a day at different sizes. I'm just not confident it's reliable.
