I'd seen this advertised on Amazon for some time and was counting the days until I could order it. I finally received this item today. The book itself is beautifully presented with some great colour photos in amongst the black and white pics. It's informative and entertaining and a worthy addition to anybody's book collection.
HOWEVER, as I was looking through it I had a niggling feeling that parts of it looked all too familiar. Sure enough,it turns out that this book was initially published in 2000 and I already had it!! Back then it was called " The Peter Cushing Companion". I'm really annoyed that the cover of the book and the title have been changed to such an extent that I thought I was buying a brand new publication. If you didn't buy this book when it first came out then I heartily recommend it. Just be aware this is a re-print with a new look and a few updates. I could have saved myself ÂŁ12!!.

One of the best books about the actor is "The Peter Cushing Companion" by David Miller. Now there's a better one, because Titan Books has (have?) published a revised edition for his centenary, retitled "Peter Cushing: A Life in Film". Because of Cushing's reputation as a master of horror his films will be enjoyed by millions for decades to come, but that reputation has tended to overshadow his subtle and meticulous acting in other fields, most of them on stage or television. The 1954 BBC TV production of "1984" is available on DVD (in America, but not, absurdly, in the UK); Cushing's tortured performance as Winston Smith is superb. It's also worth seeking out his pre-Hammer films, such as "Alexander the Great", "Moulin Rouge", and especially Olivier's "Hamlet". He played Sherlock Holmes seventeen times, from Hammer's entertaining, though deeply flawed "Hound of the Baskervilles" in 1958 to Tyburn's excellent "The Masks of Death" in 1984. Of the 1968 BBC TV series, only six episodes survive, but they include the two-part "Hound of the Baskervilles", which many of us rate the finest screen version of the story. David Miller's book is a worthy tribute to a great actor.

A Life in Film: Peter Cushing, is a wonderful read about the great man. Through his early stage work, to his Hollywood adventures and of course his Hammer Horror days, the book has it all. It is chockablock full of photos and I mean there are a lot, of high quality and never before seen. The middle has some colour shots also.

But this book is of course about the man himself. I loved the little details, like actual dates when his movies were shot and even dates of his appearances on TV. I thought I knew a lot about Cushing, but never knew that he still acted in America and out of the country even in the 1970s. You find out about his beloved wife Helen- and all manners of things. The back of the book has a detailed and painstakingly throrough account of all of Cushings work and TV appearances. Quite simply it is worth every penny.

Those of you that are giving the book one star are harsh- all you had to do was inform amazon and get a refund. True the book is rehashed from an earlier edition, but for fans who don't have that book a quick look at the average ratings would suggest this stand alone book is awful, which it cleary isn't.

WARNING -- This booked was first published in 2000 under the title THE CUSHING COMPANION, then again in 2005 as THE COMPLETE PETER CUSHING. Well I guess it wasn't "complete" because now it has been published again(!) as PETER CUSHING A LIFE IN FILMS. I was already ripped off with the second book, I'll be damned if I gonna buy it a third time.
