This is tricky to review because as a Kiss fan of around 30 years standing I have a love of hard rock well delivered, and this is definitely not a Kiss album, or a hard rock album. It is however a more than adequate r & b piece with some great pieces. Stand outs for me would be 'I can't stop the rain' and 'You Matter to me,' both of which do what they do very well indeed. Peter has a great and distinctive voice and he deserved more accolade for this piece than it ever got from within the band or amongst the record buying public. I find it is more often on my car cd than many albums I have and as I listen to it more it has grown on me. I probably never really "got it" originally, but I find it often more in tune with my mood now adays than ever before! Buy it, but do not expect a Kiss album or a rock album. If you download one track only then go for 'I can't stop the rain.'

When KISS first formed, Peter Criss was sidelined as a songwriter. It was only after the band scored a massive hit single with Beth in 1976 that the band gave him a chance. His 1978 release is often lambasted by KISS fans as the worst of the four albums. I feel moved to defend the Catman here as the record is quite good actually. It was the first of the four I bought and I still like it to this day.

Like Gene Simmons, Peter brought all the songs that were unsuitable to KISS to the fore here. Unlike Gene, his material that was denied was actually worth listening to. The tracks are jazzy, inspired by rhythm and blues and pop. The best songs are That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes and I Can't Stop the Rain, but others like Hooked on Rock 'n' Roll and Easy Thing are fine tunes too. Most of album is fairly good without being truly memorable (apart from That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes and I Can't Stop the Rain) but is always worth a listen.

The album is so unlike KISS, that it becomes easy to hear why Peter felt moved to leave just two years after its release. Despite being knocked by KISS fans for years, the album is a decent offering, although I prefer his first solo album after leaving KISS (Out of Control).

Stupid people don't take consideration that Peter came from a different generation, based on jazz, blues, country and the early 50's rock roll.
The album is very good, deserve 5 stars and so far it is the best solo album from Peter ...it has rock n roll, ballads, smooth disco... and the album was well produced. SAY IT ALL!

I first got this in 1979 on picture disc, and hated every song on it. It was a vile album from KISS' weakest link. I honestly didn't play this for years. It was a truly waste of vinyl BUT as it was KISS, and I had the others, I had to have this as well.
I honestly thought we'd get a LOT of drums ala Gene Krupa or Buddy Rich, especially as they were influences, but we got bilge that made 'Beth' seem like the greatest song ever written.....and the ONLY contribution Criss made was vocals and percussion!
Now, Fast Forward 30+ years, I played the newly acquired CD, and warmed to it like I hadn't before. I'll give Criss his due here, he put out an album that HE wanted to do, even if it alienated fans on its initial release.
Frehleys' is still the stand out solo for me, Stanleys' is a rock masterpiece, albeit a little dated these days..........and Simmons' is STILL something akin to what the cat dragged in (apart from Rick Nielsons' blistering solo in 'See You In Your dreams Tonight')
Overall, as Im older now, I'll give Criss belated credit........even if some of the songs are weak.

Like gene simmons' album this disc is true to the artist, peter played music for himself, its unlikely he thought kiss fans would fall over themselves to buy this, this was his first escape attempt, like simmons KISS was a means to an end, this was peter's last chance at stardom and he played rock music which wasnt his favourite type of music,he's confirmed that him self, depite all the dodgy circumstances surrounding this album, car wrecks.alcohol, drugs, hand injuries, this is a fine record,if this had flown up the charts and went multi platignum (genuinely) then i've no doubt peter would have left then. This is a genuinely overlooked disc, tracks like i cant stop the rain/hooked on rock n roll/you matter to me etc are superb even peters' rod stewart vocals are enjoyable,in fact had rod released this album it would have been a world wide smash, sadly it only increased peter's dis-satisfaction with kiss

Personaly, I always thought Peter Criss should have been the co-lead singer in Kiss with Paul Stanley. Both have trully great singing voices, with Peter's very suited to the Jazzy, R 'n' B, Soul fare on offer here. Without question my favourite of the Kiss Solo offerings - closely followed by Paul's (see I'm consistent?)

Alas, this is so far from the Kiss sound -unlike Paul's - that it was never given the respect it deserves. As an album taken on its own merits I think it could have done very well, especially on the US R'n'B/Soul charts, but alas...

A pity Peter abandonded this style after it's failure, though you can hardy blame him. Forget Kiss when you buy and listen to this, think a mellow, jazzy cocktail of great songs, sung with passion and a great soulful voice and you might just be surprised at the cream on offer.
