I write because I have a need to express myself: it is an integral part of my identity. I try to be honest, especially when recounting my many and varied adventures. I am lucky enough to see the humour in even the darkest situations - and, trust me, I have been in a few. But even on the blackest day the word "haddock" can have me in stitches. My literary hero is John Steinbeck and perhaps, one day, I might write a single phrase that is half as good as his worst. I have been addicted to reading since I was five years old and there is no doubt that my love of books has shaped who I am today. I have dabbled in many genres from poetry to journalism. My first book, "Tapas and Tinto" is something I am very proud of, but it is not the full story. The unexpurgated version of my time in Spain is a much longer document that lives in the bowels of my laptop, waiting for the moment to emerge blinking and mewling into the harsh light of day. I am a man who believes passionately in many things: some people take this trait to be a fault. In my rich and varied career I have enjoyed stints as; petrol pump attendant, civil servant, retail manager, building labourer, marine rigger, pipe fitter's mate, teaching assistant, teacher and nightclub doorman. I suspect I am one of the few former heavyweight boxers to have appeared on Mastermind. I live in the hope that I will, one day, invent something of such genius that I am lifted from my current, humble surroundings and admitted to the gilded palaces of obscene wealth. But until that day comes, I labour on - teaching Spanish and writing books in my spare time.
