From the manufacturer
PetSafe Staywell Original 2-Way Pet Door
The Original Staywell Pet Door is available in three sizes; small, medium and large, each of which is available in three different colour finishes – white, brown or silver. Supplied with a closing panel for when it’s not in use or for keeping your pet safely indoors. Suitable for most doors and walls.
What are the advantages of a Pet Door?
Busy owners can allow their pets freedom to self-exercise and explore.
Pet Doors reduce heat loss because they are small, are shut most of the time and are low to the ground.
Pet Doors can be fitted to internal doors or cages to create sanctuaries for individual pets.
Pet Doors can be locked or use selective entry to prevent unauthorised animals intruding into the home.
For more freedom
How do Pet Doors work?
Pet Doors are pushed open by pets and do not require constant authorisation from the owner. This potentially allows the pet access to the garden whenever they want it, avoiding toileting accidents and therefore relieving the owner from constant supervision.
Installation and fitting
The pet door is easy to install and suitable for doors, walls and windows of all materials.
All pet doors are designed to make fitting as quick and easy as possible – in three easy steps:
Measure the distance from the ground to the pet’s belly and make that measurement from the ground up, onto the door – this makes sure that the cutting template is positioned correctly and that the pet door is the right height for the pet.
Using the cutting template as a guide, use a drill and jigsaw to cut the hole in the door.
Make sure the locking mechanism on the pet door is on the right side of the house (inside or outside) and use the screws provided to secure into place.
Once a pet door is fitted it is a good idea to allow your pet to gradually become familiar with it. You can prop the door open or in some cases, fit the frame but leave the ‘flap’ out. This will allow you to tempt pets through using a favourite treat. But don’t force your pet or they may become scared. Once your pet is comfortable, the flap can be replaced. Above all – be patient with your pet.

So I purchased the dog flap... I went for the medium as she's approximately 15kg. When it came I was mmm 🤔 looked a little small, so I ordered the the large also, well I felt a bit like Goldilocks at this point as it was massive. Anyway after a bit of coaxing managed to see her go through the medium.
I volunteered my pa to fit it into my vintage back door. The instructions seemed relatively straightforward... I thought.
Just a word of warning and the reason for the four stars was the template is not correct (according to my pa) by one eighth (whatever that means think it's roughly 10mm) if he had cut the hole out according to the template he would have been fitting the bolts into the hole 😬
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you don't have a flat door you will need to accommodate the gap. He needed to fit extra pieces of wood.
Anyway he managed to do the job bless him... wasn't a quick job, a few hours or more. You need to cut the bolts to size also to the thickness of the door. (I have popped some pictures to show.
Well my pooch has gone through it a few times with treats but think it will take a bit more training, also the outside step is higher so she needs to jump up and through, although she can do it, she's a determined little monkey 😉
The plastic is a bit flimsy, but for money paid I wouldn't complain.
So if you have the skills or know someone who does and not on an expensive door this is ok and my door was battered anyway so I wasn't losing much if it didn't work 😃.
I'm just hoping I will be able to sit for a whole hour now without having to open the back door!! That would be bliss!! 👍
Ok this is the best thing I've done!! It's been a week so I can't comment on longevity but as for my sanity and peace ✌️It's great! She comes and goes whenever she pleases! Plus I'm nice a toasty cos the door is not letting in all the cold air (positive for the Enviromentalist... using less energy on heating) plus I can chill for longer than 15 minutes.
My pa did also update me about the template issue... I said it was incorrect but it is soooo exact that if the drill hole wanders just slightly you would end up in the main hole and not square up to meet the inside piece. 🤓
Definitely recommend it so far! 😊
Ps my pooch now uses it to escape bath time 😬 I didn't account for that but luckily there is a cover to block it off!!
Original review as below.
A friends fitted the door yesterday for us.
Nightmare of a template and cut as far too close for fitting screws to edge of hole. Fitted to an exterior wooden door.
Placement and cutting done the bolts included needed to be cut. Once cut the nuts wouldn't go on easy at all. Eventually managed them. Fiddly things.
Dogs didn't like the door and plenty of treats later they have learned the art. Going out is easy but strangely coming in is not. Yet to perfect this.
I like the slide in blanking plate for when you don't want it in use or for holidays etc.
Plastic frame and the actual flaps seem cheap plastic. Reviewers have mentioned this as a fail point. Let's hope it was a certain batch as I remembered this make from my old old house as being a good one.
Magnet seems to be ok and kept the breeze out thus far.
Time will tell.
4/5 due to bolts and build quality.
Unfortunately the plastic door has cracked and broken (admittedly likely due to our boisterous puppy bringing items in that aren't supposed to be brought in... like brooms and a recently planted then dug up apple tree).
Its ideal if you have a calm dog who goes in and out slowly... mine see it as a challenge to see how fast they can run in and out. Now the outer door has also cracked so all we are left with is the internal door which goes on at night time, and a piece of the original plastic. The outer part with the magnet on didn't stand up to puppy's vigour.
