In summary, "Cubism" is my favourite Pet Shop Boys concert recording from the opener "Psychological" right through to "one nil to the arsenal" or as it's better known "Go West".
These world tours have usually left me sceptical. The 1989 Tour and the Performance tour (1991) were bordering on pretentious, while the Nightlife Tour (1999-2000) was simply too monumental in style and in content. For me the Boys are at their best as musicians, when performing their music, with singers and dancers on stage. The best PSB concerts can be found in the Discovery Tour (1994), the Savoy residence (1997) or the Release Tour (2002).
In the booklet accompanying this DVD, Neil claims that with Cubism, the Boys have tried to reconcile "Performance" with "Release". There is a bit of truth in this statement, in the sense that there is a show (with a cube. of variable dimensions, taking centre stage during the concert) but there is no attempt at a narrative. There are two male singers with Sylvia Mason-James and two extremely good dancers, Nathan Holliday and Ivan Blackstock stealing the show more than once.
Overall this feels more like a regular concert than Performance ever did, which is why we give five stars to the DVD. Another good reason to be generous is the track list. To be sure, we have to deal with 7 tracks from the deplorable "Fundamental" out of the 25 forming the concert but at least four are among our favourites in the album ("The Sodom and Gommorah show", "God Willing", "Psychological" and the masterpiece "Integral") while the remaining three are well played (except *Numb", still unbearably sugary).
More importantly, the Boys have unearthed gems that had not been played in a while: "Dreaming of the Queen", "Shopping", So Hard (performed by the guest singers) and the beautiful "Flamboyant".Read more ›
