What was Sir Robert Carey like in 1568 when he was eight? Perhaps a quiet, studious boy...?
Er... no. He was already charming and ingenious, full of energy -- and perpetually in trouble.
This short story opens the Young Carey series and shows him at home at Hunsdon manor, playing tricks, maddening everybody and generally being a thorough nuisance to his father, Henry Carey Lord Hunsdon and his mother, Lady Ann Hunsdon. They can't even send him to be a page in someone else's household! What on earth will they do with him?

I am an ardent admirer of the Sir Robert Carey books, which makes the reader feel as if they are there,. as well as being realistic regarding that period of our history. Always awaiting the next book?

Sweet little amuse bouche...pleasant household, nice parents...i hope they were that kind and loving for real...there is a charming immediacy to the text, almost the feel of a diary or journal, which is delightful...but of course too short...just a snippet...

This would have made a fine longer story but it seemed to be over before it began.

For those who know P.F. Chisholm's series about Sir Robert Carey in the wild English/Scottish borderlands, this is a must. Young Robin is rash, impulsive, independent and very clever. Just like his adult self.

This is a charming short story about a bored little boy who grew up to be the hero of the lovely Robert Carey novels. A bright eight-year-old, who causes his tutor to despair and endangers his little sister Philadelphia. His parents have to work out what to do with him.
