During the Second World War, the UK government created the Ministry of Information to handle official news, to maintain morale and to conduct publicity campaigns for government departments. In these desperate times, the Ministry produced steady streams of propaganda for the home front, for the colonies and for dissemination through occupied countries. Patriotic material encouraged Britons to maintain a stiff upper lip, nutritional information kept the strained populace healthy, and thousands of postcards, leaflets, and booklets were dropped from aircraft over occupied countries, undermining the enemy s influence. In 2000, the Ministry s archive was deposited with the British Library, making an enormous collection of great social and historical significance available to the public for the first time. In this bold and evocative book, David Welch, the leading historian of propaganda, presents the best examples from the wartime information machine and reveals the history behind this key government body.

A well research book, insofar as I was able to read it, let down horrendously by its format. Text generally occupies approximately only half of the page width, making the print quite small and tiresome to read. There are also many illustrations of posters, leaflets and other documents reproduced in such small size they are impossible to see without a magnifying glass - if at all. I managed to struggle through just over half the book before giving up. I usually retain books for reference purposes but this one will not be among them. My advice to anybody thinking of purchasing a copy is to look for a cheap secondhand copy and do not pay full price for one. It is about the worst book, in terms of readability, I have purchased for a very long time.

Whilst this contains some exceptional illustrations it has to be said that there is not enough text. There seems to be little consideration of the efforts to being America into the war.In particular there s no mention of the film 49th Parallel which was partly financed by the MOI which was made for that some purpose

what a great book - i'm a designer/editor/psychologist + practising brand strategist - found it a very interesting read - the writing/editing is excellent - it gives a potted history of world war 2 - showing tons of designs from the ministry of information (now the central office of information) - intended to influence national and international public opinion - in order to 'win the war'
