Burton was a man of his time, and a man of the establishment and that is evident in his writings. To the modern reader that can be a little jarring at times. Looking past that Burton was a truly remarkable man and would be in any age. His mastery of twenty plus languages and numerous dialects alone would be remarkable; but add to that his prolific authorship and translations (Arabian Nights, Kama Sutra et al.) and we still only scratch the surface of the man. His explorations and anthropological insights are still valuable a century plus later, and this work (and its companion volume) contain some fascinating insights into Muslim culture at the time of writing, and Burton's personal perspective on his travelling companions and the countries he travels through. A century later various factions still vie for 'ownership' of him claiming (amongst other things) he was a closet-Romany, closet-Muslim, closet-homosexual-such is the allure of the man and his myth.

What is disappointing is the absence of any way of navigating the book in the Kindle. A page at a time is all you can do. No jumping to the next chapter here I'm afraid. The issue with that is that the first chapter alone has 25 footnotes on unfamiliar terms etc. that runs to eight pages and which can only be accessed by scrolling a page at a time to the end of the chapter-and the a page at a time back. Wearisome to say the least. If I didn't have some knowledge of Arab terms I think that this might have spoilt the read or even stopped me reading it altogether. In short a great piece of work, but hard work if you don't have some knowledge beforehand. If that is the case the paper version might be a better buy?

It would be pretty vain for anyone to try and "review" and pass judgement on this book. The level of erudition is staggering and every page is packed full of fascinating anecdote, character and information. Burton was an intellectual giant whose learning and adventurous spirit puts us all to shame.
