The characters within are fully realized and multidimensional, this reviewer's favorite being the rigidly professional Deptford Assassin, Mr. Dry. But there are others, a young woman Alienist, a young man in love, an old, dour detective who knows all too well that his death is lurking around the corner. Each is portrayed with care, and each serves as a reflection of the tumultuous Edwardian era.
Until John provides us with a bigger collection, we will have to content ourselves with this slim volume. However, there is quite a bit to be had in it.
