Product Description

Originally released in 1972 on Shandar Records this is a reissue of one of the masterpieces of American minimal music by one of the pioneers of minimalism, Terry Riley. Recorded in two different concerts in 1971 and 1972 in Los Angeles and Paris, Persian Surgery Dervishes presents two different versions of the title track. Terry Riley, all alone with his keyboards and feed-back, improvises on a basic structure strongly influenced by the emotion and relationship developed with the audience. The results are two very different versions: one, the American, very dynamic with moments that reach trance-like peaks resembling the dance of whirling dervishes. The other one, recorded in Paris, is more meditative and thoughtful, dominated by a deep sense of quietness. Persian Surgery Dervishes is also one of the milestones of the Psychedelic Era of the Seventies as it was the source of inspiration, together with "A Rainbow in Curved Air", of many of the pop groups of the German and English scene such as Popul Vuh, Amon Duul II and Curved Air. Personnel: Terry Riley (electric organ + feed back) --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

I first bought the vinyl french import release of this in 1972. A speculative buy after hearing Rainbow in Curved Air, probably played by Radio DJ John Peel for all that I can remember. It was an essential play for friends staying late into the night. Those dim-lit rooms, the smoke, the music.

Days, weeks, months and years pass. Careers pass. Relationships begin and end. Children grow and leave home. And the records once enjoyed consigned to storage as life takes over.

Discovered again nearly 40 years later, this work not only sounds as fresh as the day first heard, it seems to extend as much to the past and the future as it did when it was recorded.

Persian Surgery Dervishes is an unknown masterpiece. It is vital, spiritual, emotional and timeless. In these troubled times more people need to hear this. It takes the listener elsewhere; some other beautiful place. Fall into this music and let it heal. Float on the layers of rhythm and melody. Meditate. Feel joy. Feel ecstasy.

Terry: Two keyboards + Tape machine = A masterpiece

This beautiful music precedes important minimal works by artists such as Steve Reich, and predicts the era of digital sampling (Terry is using tape loops and echo techniques in these live performances)and electronica.

I so hope this recording might still reach and inspire a new audience. We need music like this more now than ever.

Performance 2 is the best of the two CDs.

Just amazing.

The other reviews allude to vinyl as the better format; I'll take that on trust - but don't be dissuaded from buying the CD for a taster. This music is fluid and playful and gloriously alive. [I bought this at the same time as Harmonia live '74 - both are astounding - never mind the '60s this is the crest of the wave!]. Daniel Caux's sleeve notes are a pleasure too "..the rhythm evocates.....a premordial innocence..." (sic) - yeah!!

Both performances are marvels of improvisation. Even more extraordinary is how different the same piece sounds. Terry Riley - THE master!!
