To wake in the middle of the night from peaceful sleep, only to discover, there’s someone/something in the room with me and it’s moving towards the bed where I am. It’s getting closer by the second, soon it will be under the covers and screaming doesn’t help, there’s no one nearby to hear me or to react.
That’s exactly where our protagonist Philippa finds herself and worse is to come.
Philippa lives on Cyan, which is obviously a planet somewhere far out in the galaxy, where a group of settlers try to build a new life for themselves.
The settlement in which she lives, is surrounded by a perimeter fence, but there were enough failures and breaches since they arrived ten years ago, for something living to get inside the compound.
Philippa will soon find out, what got inside and is now crawling up to her feet, is something like a 25 ft long centipede and the creepy fellow has chosen her as a host.
Having a parasite attached to her or infecting her, would leave Philippa with only two options, either the medical or security team are familiar with the animal and can help or they have no idea what to do and she would have to live outside the protective fence, as she would pose a risk for the rest of the group.
Living outside the perimeter, means living in the wild, surrounded by mostly unknown territory and strange (sometimes pretty crazy) and dangerous creatures. There are enough form the security team, who perish on their regular control rounds and they have weapons.
What will happen next and will Philippa get out alive?
I love a good story, which has me hooked within seconds, and enjoyed the unique world the author has created on Cyan. There is a nice twist towards the end and I found myself smiling. Cleverly done.
The thought which always went through my head, though, was, how does she sleep? I mean, in terms of lying down. I somehow, couldn’t imagine it.
Sure enough, there’s an end to the story, you could even say, there’s an end with a “bang”, or better, the end starts with a “bang”.
