This course aims to lead on from the earlier related basic 'complete your Italian' course, and much of it does go over the same ground covering the various tenses, use of pronouns etc, but it does so more extensively, and also goes on to cover the subjunctive and the past definite. It also takes a lot of care in indicating the subtleties of which and when various tenses are appropriate. The vocabulary is also fairly extensive especially in areas the student is most likely to come across in meeting Italians, with many useful 'filler' phrases.

The main plus point of the course is the spoken texts by Italian speakers at a fairly fast pace, where you can surprise yourself by finding that with some repeated effort you can fully understand what they say. There are a lot of exercises and reference material, and the author makes no bones about the need to come to grips with grammar, or in indicating that, like most things in life, you get out what you put in, and she recommends ways you can help yourself here. Anyone making the effort should get a lot out of this course and, while total fluency really requires living in the country,a student will have a pretty good grasp of Italian if he or she takes fully on board what the course contains. Well worth the money.

This is a useful publication but it has been around for some time as an earlier edition under a different name. There is no denying its usefulness but in my opinion it oversells itself. It might help you sound like a native but it is not as advanced as you might believe from the notes on the casing. Certainly the CDs have an authentic ring to them but I felt that they petered out early the publication could have benefited form more advanced conversation from native speakers. Having said that people with a little Italian will find it useful, those that have done some studying will find it less useful.

I have used a number of these "Perfect your..." courses and this is the best one I have used. The standard is about A-level (it certainly won't take you to C1 level as the box claims - you'll need to live in Italy for at least a year to achieve that).
It would be great either for someone who has completed a couple of beginners / low-intermediate courses and now needs a greater challenge or for someone who used to be good at Italian and needs a refresher. It covers all aspects of grammar in quite a pacey fashion, assuming you've seen the constructs before but are hazy on the detail. The dialogues are recorded at a natural speed and with all the features of natural conversation but there's no background noise. As such, they're challenging but accessible.
The book is cheaply produced but the content is varied and useful, with plenty of practical tips.

Overall, well worth the £20 I paid for it.

Very good indeed. Could do with a bit less talk by the instructor. But still one of the best of its kind.
