GDM Music is proud to announce the special edition CD reissue of for a Fistful of Dollars, with the famous score by Ennio Morricone for the classic movie directed by Sergio Leone in 1964. This edition was prepared in close cooperation with Ennio Morricone who authorized 10 unedited tracks coming from the original 1964 mono session tapes. Through an appropriate digital remastering and a careful restoration session we could remove all the original sound defects and anomalies like the correction of big defects still existing on the two channels since the original recording session. This CD features the music chronologically sequenced as it appears in the movie (alternating the stereo mixes to the newly discovered mono mixes). This CD contains around 38 minutes of music and it's enriched with a 12 page full color booklet. 2006.

The GDM version features 17 tracks and negates all previous 8 track versions, many of which bolstered the lamentably short running time with the 8 track score from it's sequel 'For A Few Dollars More'. The pointless Fistful suite (not featured here) combined all 7 tracks into one.
A Fistul Of Dollars was not the first spaghetti western and not Morricone's first western score but it was the first to find success outside it's native Italy. Directed by Sergio Leone and based on Kurosawa's samurai movie 'Yojimbo', 'A Fistul...' was the first of 8 collaborations with composer/arranger Ennio Morricone. Much of the score was composed prior to the movie so Leone could play it on set to choregraph the actors. Together Leone and Morricone effectively changed the way westerns were shot and scored and of course turned Clint Eastwood into a film star.
Although Morricone's use of trumpet and whistling were undeniably influenced by Dimitri Tiomkins scores for both Rio Bravo and Gunfight At The OK Coral, his use of electric guitar (fender stratocaster), whip cracks, hammers, shouting, ocarina and Jew harps sounded unlike anything heard in the history of western scores. Credit must also be paid to the players, some of whom are seminal figures in Italian soundtrack - Franco De Gemini (harmonica) and Alessandro Alessandroni (guitar/whistling) and his (Alessandroni's) vocal group I Cantori Moderni which included sopranist Edda Dell'Orso - her name would later become synomonous with Morricone's.
The 10 bonus tracks are in mono and placed correctly between the stereo ones. Inclusion of the vocal by Peter Tevis, admittedly not included in the movie, would have made the package complete. Sadly, GDM has chosen not to include any sleeve notes which seems like a missed opportunity for such an important and much loved score.
As a footnote, Morricone claimed Fistful was the worst score he ever wote and the worst movie Sergio Leone ever directed. Having heard near enough every Morricone score available, I would have to respectfully disagree with Il Maestro and could name at least 200 scores that would rank beneath it. As for Leone, well he only ever made 10 movies, 7 of which he directed and the others he either co-directed or produced.
