Compared to the standard 18-55mm lens this is a fair bit heavier and about double the bulk. However it is much lighter and smaller than carrying a bunch of lenses around with you.

It also has a far stiffer zoom ring than the standard lens. This takes some getting used to, but it helps prevent zoom creep when carried lens-downwards.

On the plus side the lens has a superb long range room. About as long a zoom as you can sensibly use hand-held without using rather silly high ISO settings.

As a Pentax DA lens this one has on-board operating information that works with most Pentax DSLR bodies to automatically correct the image distortion that all lenses exhibit. Zoom lenses are worse than most and super-zooms are the most extreme.. This lens works well with the geometric auto-correction settings in my K5. I haven't tried the auto-correction chromatic settings in earnest yet.

It is worth noting that the shots taken without auto-correction are saved much faster to the memory card. If you need to take dozens of action shots and want to guarantee no pauses when taking them then it is worth knowing that this lens is included in the post-processing correction options in Adobe's CS packages.

There have already been many reviews of this lens on-line. In it's Pentax branded form and in its Canon and Nikon mount variants under the Tamron brand. I won't repeat them here. Just a word or two of advice...

1) Stop down to F11 or higher for the sharpest shots, especially at wide angles.

2) When zooming, come slightly back from maximum zoom for the sharpest shots at long range.

very very good quality lens. i use it on a k3 and it gives good results. focus is a little slow (not really slow just not very fast), i didn't notice any great focus improvement coming from a 55-300. image quality is miles better though. So if you have a 55-300 and your frustrated with the poor focus speed but happy with image quality this lens probably isn't worth the upgrade, if your happy with the focus but frustrated with the image quality then this is worth the upgrade. 100% crop on this is about the same as 25% crop on the 55-300.

Pentax customer service in europe though is absolutely useless, even worse than that. The lens cap broke on my one straight out of the box, no big deal really as you can get a no name replacement for a couple of euro. but i tried to get in contact with pentax customer support to see if i could get a replacement under warranty and there was just no reply. i tried using the contact form on the website and every email i could find. i eventually got a reply from jpss uk who said they passed it onto the correct people in pentax who assured them that they would deal with it. i never heard anything from pentax after that. If it was a major fault i would have gone through amazon for the warranty, who are usually very good, i just didnt want to have to sent the whole lens back for this small fault.

I've got the DA35 macro but often I would end up using the kit 18-55 at its wide end instead. The DA21 seemed like the ideal answer.

The DA21 is small and the clever lens hood hardly adds to its length. On a K-7 it looks positively diminutive. As with all the limiteds, the design and build exude that certain satisfying precision feel. The lens hood design is unconventional but effective. The lens cap is a solid piece of felt lined aluminium, in keeping with the look and feel of the lens, but a bit impracticable and probably expensive to replace. Fortunately a standard old Pentax slip-on 51mm plastic lens cap fits perfectly.

The 21mm focal length is just right on an APS sensor camera, such as my K-7. It is just wide enough to make a difference but not too wide to give that somewhat boring stretched effect of ultra-wides. Autofocus is accurate, quiet and quick - there isn't a great deal of mass to spin around with this lens.

Optically, this lens is sharp enough to allow some cropping without a great loss of quality. It is quite sharp even wide open and gets better stopped down. The sweet spot seems to be somewhere between f/4 and f/5.6. There is a fair amount of barrel distortion and some CA, both easily correctable in post-processing. Contrast and colour rendering are excellent. Flare resistance is good, although when shooting into the sun at a certain orientation it is possible to provoke a 'green blob' flare, probably a sensor reflection.

I can see this lens staying on my camera a lot of the time. It is inconspicuous enough for street photography and sharp and wide enough for my landscape and architectural shots.

I have been using Pentax * lenses for over 25 years and have never been dissapointed with thier quality. THis lens maintains the quality, I was a little reluctant in the first place because of the huge zoom range 60-250 mm but it seems to be very sharp accross the whole range. I used it with a vengence over the past two weeks at two airshows and am impressed with the results, sharp and contrasty pictures so I would recomend this lens to anyone

For some years Pentax have produced "star" lenses (M*, A* etc) and now they have started producing the DA* lenses which include their "supersonic" SDM focusing motor (you sometimes have to upgrade the firmware on your camera to take advantage of this, although the older focussing system will still work). This lens is fast (f2.8) and as a result a little heavy, but gives utterly stunning results: very sharp, clean and undistorted. Their have been some reports in the literature of bad examples (mainly focussing issues) but mine has worked flawlessly. The autofocus doesn't seem much faster than the old system, but is almost silent. I am now saving up for the DA* 16-50mm. It is great to Pentax starting to produce good top quality gear once more after some years of producing less than wonderful kit.
