Rather this is a journey in the company of a man transitioning between his prime and middle age, and what he thinks and sees as he walks from Derbyshire to Northumberland. It's mainly about human nature, through Wallington untangling his own motivations for undertaking this walk as well as his meetings and observations with others. His dog, Boogie, provides light relief.
It's an easy page-turner and kept me going happily through a 3-hour plane journey. It's rarely less than amusing and is sometimes genuinely funny. I wouldn't call it profound, but it does untangle the motives people in their late 30s and 40s have for doing things, and in that sense it speaks to me more than the thoughts of a long dead philosopher.
Buy this book expecting a pleasant few hours in Wallington's relaxed company and you won't be disappointed.
