Leaving Your Phone in Your Pocket Has Never Been Classier
We all need to be connected and accessible, but pulling out your phone at dinner to check a text message or incoming call is a bit gauche. With Pebble Steel, just a quick glance lets you read messages, see who’s calling or see important emails and never miss a beat. Or with hundreds of free apps, check the weather, stocks, train schedule and more. And yes, it also tells the time—with nearly 1,000 watchfaces to suit your style.
Perfect for Meetings Underwater
Ridiculous, right? Pebble Steel doesn’t think so. It’s waterproof up to 5 ATM (approx. 165 feet) so you can be accessible even while doing laps in the pool. With the available steel band, Pebble Steel is perfect for things like running in the rain or boating, while keeping your phone tucked away and dry. And while we’re on the subject of exercise, Pebble Steel also syncs with popular apps like RunKeeper, letting you track your progress from your wrist.
Apps for Everything — Pebble App Store
Discover thousands of apps and watchfaces to customize Pebble Steel to fit your life. Check sports scores with the ESPN app, listen to your music, or start voice navigation without having to touch your phone. Popular apps like RunKeeper and FreeCaddie help you track performance and enjoy what you love. Check in on FourSquare with a single click or find a place to eat on Yelp! Pebble is an open platform, so new apps are always in the works from our development community and partners, letting you take advantage of new watchfaces, games and other innovations. Control your favorite music apps—including iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora—from your Pebble without missing a beat while running, cycling or just playing music from a dock at home. With notifications, you can get discreet updates on the information that is most important to you. In addition to Caller ID, email, text message, and calendar alerts, you can choose to receive notifications from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.
Thanks to long battery life, Pebble Steel will go up to 7 days between charges. It notifies you when it’s getting low, and you simply connect it to a USB port using the easy magnetic cable. Then you’re good to go. Pebble Steel has easy-access Up and Down buttons to scroll through watchfaces and menus. The Select button takes you to the main menu, which includes music control, alarm, and settings. A simple tap on the watch or flick of your wrist will illuminate the backlight.
Steel’s e-Paper displays texts, notifications and incoming calls even in direct sunlight

I didn't like the leather strap, so I also bought the official steel strap which makes the watch feel more robust. To me the bulkier strap is more visually appealing against the thickness of the brushed steel watch unit itself compared to the leather strap.
I use mine mainly for Endomondo (GPS sports tracking), To-do list notifications, the gentle alarm for waking in the morning (unlike some other reviewers I have no problem with the vibration being too soft, but I am a light sleeper), and reviewing text message notifications from a variety of apps.
* You really do get battery life of 4+ days, even with a fair bit of use. Disabling the backlight seems to give a few more days.
* The new Android Wear integration means you can now reply to text messages directly from the watch with some stock answers or using emoticons.
* Using AutoPebble in conjunction with Tasker I can create my own menus and launch actions. That pretty much allows you to do anything you want on the phone, depending on your Tasker skills of course.
* With the standard function I can reject calls without taking my phone out of a pocket. But when running it's ideal as I also use a bluetooth headset for music, and with the watch I can see who's phoning and then answer calls too. Without interrupting my run and stopping.
* I can see the screen clearly in most light conditions.
* I can control music even when my phone is elsewhere at home.
* When running I can now hide the phone in a waterproof pocket and still see progress on the watch. No more twisting my arm round at awkward angles to see the phone screen!Read more ›
In terms of design, the Pebble Steel looks somewhat retro, in a quirky 'Steam Punk' kind of way. The steel case and buttons are well machined, and the black leather strap completes the look. My only gripe is the leather strap and its fitting. I know the strap won't last for ever, so I'll need to purchase a replacement at some point. Fixed in later models, the non-standard fitting of the Pebble Steel means limited choice which is a shame.
The 301 and 401 Pebble smartwatches have just enough features for the 'average Joe', and I suspect we may see these show up in future products from Fitbit. The watch receives (vibrating) notifications via an app on your iOS or Android smartphone, and there are of plenty of third-party lifestyle apps to choose from too, such as sleep trackers, step counters, navigation, etc. The watch has independent timer, alarm, and stopwatch functionality, and can also control music playback of apps such as Spotify.
As you can see from the photos attached, you can get a variety of different watch faces for your Pebble. You can even design your own using a simple web interface! Some watch faces are configurable via the Pebble smartwatch app on your smartphone.Read more ›
Before you add apps to it you can receive vibration alerts from almost any phone function such as SMS, phone calls, calendar and so on. You can quickly set alerts to take a cake from the oven or remind yourself to phone someone at lunchtime. This first gen Pebble counts steps, your sleep or records your bike trip itinerary (via your phone).
Like everyone else, I have my favourite apps: UK Transport tells me the next train or bus closest to me; Alarms quietly tells me when my exam is half-way through; 'Get back to' tells me where I parked the car on holiday before we walked around town; Compass tells me where we're headed; 'Ventoo' I use to record my journeys; 'Steps' tells me how much I walk in my job as a traffic warden; 'Countit-all' helps me record when my neighbour plays his music too loud; Tide-Aware was handy on a beach holiday on the Isle of Wight. OK I made up some ideas there, but I hope I've explained how this now quite cheap tech is an everyday tool for regular, not geeky people.
