Rob Ashman has created some incredible characters, Lucas and his side kick Harper are back along with Moran , and what a combination they make. Author Rob Ashman hasn’t made life easy for poor old Lucas, he’s hit rock bottom, but there’s one thing that’s keeping him going, he wants vengeance for all the terrible things the Mechanic has done, and nothing’s going to get in his way. I just love Lucas and Harper the humour and banter between the pair add some light relief to this dark read. They aren’t your typical heroes by any means, but they are refreshingly original, and I found myself cheering them on as the mechanic plays a deadly game of “cat and mouse with our unlikely heroes.
I have to mention the Mechanic what a complex and intriguing character the author has created, their a monster of the worse kind, but as in previous books in this series I did find I had some empathy for this very troubled soul as more of their past was revealed, at times I almost felt sorry for them, but this never lasted long, I much prefer a serial killer to be unlikable, but that’s the great thing about Rob Ashman’s writing he is able to evoke conflicting emotions and feelings towards his characters.
Pay The Penance made for another intense and a throughly enthralling read, I really couldn’t turn the pages on my kindle fast enough! Taut with tension the author manages to maintain the suspense to the last heart stopping chapter. Although I’m sorry this is the last book in the Mechanic series, I thought Rob Ashman bought the series to a very satisfying and fitting conclusion, at this point I was holding my breath, as the suspense reached fever pitch. This has really been a fantastic series, each book has made for an entertaining and utterly gripping read, without a doubt ALL three books in the series will be in my top reads of 2017 list.
Having read and enjoyed the previous two novels in the trilogy, I literally could not wait to see how it would all end and boy I was not disappointed!
There are so many great characters in these books. Moran I probably loved that little bit more than the others. I love a strong female character and Moran ticked all the boxes for me. In a way it felt like she was the one in charge and looking out for Lucas and Harper.
I love the relationship especially between Lucas and Harper. It’s been a rocky one at times but it is a strong and solid one that you know will last a life time. They make a great duo and the fact that Moran made it more of a trio actually worked really well.
Mechanic, what to say about them. I really got to like them in the second novel and I had so much empathy in this one for them but there is no getting away that they are extremely damaged and have gone past the point of no return. In a way the reader knows how the outcome of the story is going to go. I mean there can only ever really be one way. The author still managed to shock and surprise me though with the way that they have ended it and I absolutely loved it.
Pay The Penance is an extremely satisfying finale of what has been a highly thrilling and entertaining series. I have to admit that I am going to miss the characters as they have been a big part of my life over the last few months. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to read these books yet then I highly recommend doing so. The perfect read for fans of a seriously twisted serial killer.
I prefer to think of it as one long book split into to three parts, demanding that all three are read in order to fully comprehend the entire story. As such it is an engrossing, at times riveting, story that examines several themes, including the desire for revenge. A fast-paced, slick thriller which grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go.
