Product Description

Product Description

A collection of the surviving episodes of the BBC crime drama based on the long-running 1940s radio series. Paul Temple (Francis Matthews) is a crime writer who occasionally lends his services to Scotland Yard. Thankfully for the police, Temple is almost as good at solving crime mysteries as he is at writing them.

As a 1950s baby I well remember the styles of the seventies. This DVD is a delight to revel in nostalgia for the décor, fashions, furniture and colours of that era. Francis Matthews as Paul Temple is resolutely unflappable, and the 'baddies' can usually be spotted a mile off, but that all adds to the fun for me. One or two of the stories don't quite 'work', and are not entirely probable or plausible. This, however, is a small price to pay for the visual feast in which the settings are another positive feature. To that end the BBC chose many interesting and evocative locations, like the islands of Malta and Gozo. My wife is also a fan, so this makes 'something nice to watch together'.

Last time I saw this series was when it was first broadcasted back in 1969 to 1971. The quality of the recordings are very good especially those in colour. Out if the 52 Episodes broadcasted only 18 remain, some in black and white. They are dated compared to to-days drama and technology but many where filmed on location and in some exotic locations abroad. I decided to buy this collection on hearing the sad news of the death of it's star Francis Mathews, however, there is an interview of him reflecting on the series' and the anecdotes that creating this series produced. There is also a film and biography of the principal actors who took part in many of the episodes. I was just becoming a teenager when this was broadcasted and nostalgia can play tricks but I'm enjoying watching the DVD's. It would be nice for a new Paul Temple series brought up to date to be commissioned but still with the essence of the original.

Bit like driving a classic car and finding it wanting, this TV series takes you back to the late 60s and early 70s and shows how much things have moved on, and I don't just mean the fashions. The first episode I watched has our hero racing around Malta in a Triumph Herald Convertible wearing a ridiculous get-up. Ros Drinkwater was quite foxy at the time though! Recommended as a nostalgia trip but you might find yourself falling asleep at the lack of pace.

This is the first time I've seen these televised Paul Temple stories. I must confess to being a bit disappointed and the first story was rather bizarre. I preferred the audio CD's based on the original radio series but for a bit of nostalgia - they were okay.

Colour is stunning considering age of material. story line still amuse even though they are a little bit "hammy". Sound track recorded low compared to modern videos. Overall a great buy.

A rather uneven collection of crime/suspense/detective dvds, to be honest. Some are good, eg Cue Murder (a re-examination of an unsolved ,murder; I have explored unsolved murders and so this was of interest, even though in fiction unsolved murders cannot occur) and With Friends like these,, but others are very limp indeed. Temple is playing in a very unsympathetic manner, as an arrogant know all (the actor, in an interview here, is critical of the character he plays) and his wife is often very colourless and insipid. Plots often have gaping holes in them, or are very obvious and almost always the amount of exposition at the end is non-existent. They pass the time, but I don't think are worth a rewatch. Quite a few well known actors of the time make welcome appearances, such as Peter Sallis and the chap who plays Haskins in The Sweeney.
