Paul Surridge was born 1968 in Newport, South Wales and grew up in the valley towns of Crosskeys and Risca. He trained as a photographer's assistant for a local news agency before forming the rock band, Flyscreen, signing to Universal Music in 1995. The band toured and released several albums with favourable critical review, but failed to gain mainstream commercial success. After the band's split, Paul worked in the advertising industry as a creative and art director. Girls Can't Make Gun Noises is his first novel, based around his childhood in the Welsh Valleys during the 1970s.
