Product description

Product Description

Recorded during Simon's 1973-74 tour in the wake of the release of the album, this was Paul’s first live release and showed him performing Simon & Garfunkel songs solo in concert for the first time. The variety of songs and richness of styles provided the album's appeal. Re-mastered here for the first time it includes two previously unreleased tracks.

I used to have this on LP, and later bought the CD. It it a fantastic album, with some great supporting artists singing with Paul. He is one of few artists who can deliiver his songs live, without any loss of focus or quality. The only pity is, that there must be master tapes of the entire concert (there are lousy quality bootlegs around which have all the songs played), yet only one CD was released. Why? I would have loved to have a double CD. Maybe one day the whole set will be released (after all, it took decades for the outstanding Paul Simon Songbook to get onto CD!). But -- this is a superb album.

Although originally released in the seventies this album still gives a good feel for Paul Simon concerts.Having attended his concerts in the past I have noticed a distinct lack of banter and more effort being concentrated on the song's deliveries. This is of course typical of Simon as he has always been something of the perfectionist and also somewhat the 'Anti-Star'. This album demonstrates the wonderful guitar talent of Simon on various tracks and his totally different treatment of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' is a joy to listen to.This album is better than many 'Studio' albums by other artistes. Although this album was released long before his later 'Studio' masterpieces like 'Hearts and Bones' and 'Graceland' its still worth having for any dedicated Simon fan.I am now on my cd copy having bought the lp when released and the cassette sometime later. This is an opportunity to buy this album which may not be available easily in future.

It's great that this album is now available in re-mastered form and with two additional solo acoustic tracks (Kodachrome and Something So Right). The CD now represents most of the full show - though still not quite all of it.

Recordings of concerts often stay fresher than the albums that were being toured. That could be for several reasons, including faster tempos in concert, the performers responding to having an audience, knowing they have just one opportunity to get each song as good as it is going to be, and not being weary from endless re-takes of the same song. Many of the songs on this album are among my favourites as studio recordings too, but hearing them here is nevertheless like hearing them afresh, and the new arrangements of some of the older songs performed with Urubamba (The Boxer, Duncan and El Condor Pasa) and Jessy Dixon (Mother and Child Reunion, Bridge over Troubled Water and The Sound of Silence) give them not just freshness but a new dimension too.

I was lucky enough to catch this 1973 tour in Cornell University's Barton Hall, Ithaca, NY. Paul was nervous about playing alone and liable to sing out of tune on the solo pieces. He was said to be receiving acupuncture on his hands before each show to help them, and him, loosen-up. It was actually three years since he and Art Garfunkel had gone their separate ways, but to all concerned, I think, it still seemed odd that Paul was touring without Artie. A student flyer which deliberately confused Paul and Artie was circulating in the audience. Nervous or not, Paul winningly ad libbed that he had seen the flyer and thought it "very drole".

Another ad lib referred to the campus police, patrolling the front of stage area - "Get these pigs out of here. These kids wanna boogie.

A great original live album available on C.D. with two extra tracks. Opens with a terrific version of "Me and Julio Down by the School Yard". There is a nice interchange of Simon and Garfunkel songs with Paul's solo work. The C.D. sounds fresh and has not aged at all over the years as it is great music.
There are reworkings of "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "Sounds of Silence" which feature the Jesse Dixon singers who are a gospel group who back Paul on the concert and they also take some of the verses to well known compositions that compliment the songs incredibly well. Its worth buying the C.D. just for these two tracks as they are really sung with feeling and you realize how great they are. There is a nice version of the "Mother and Child Reunion" hit from 1972.
If you are a fan of Paul's music then this is good addition to your collection.

I've been waiting for this since 2004 when Warner Brothers remastered Simons studio albums. Live Rhymin' was not included in that program but now Legacy remastered it with 2 bonus tracks. If you want proof of Simons guitar talent then listen to these previously unissued songs (Kodachrome and Something So Right). It's Simon alone like the first three songs on the album. When you close your eyes you can imagine him playing the songs this way in the studio when he recorded a demo.

Then Urubamba (the South American band) joins him for El Condor Pasa (If I Could), Duncan and the Boxer. I always preferred this live version of Duncan over the studio version. The Jessy Dixon Singers play with Simon on the second half of the album. When you have never listened to Live Rhymin' before you will be surprised by the rearrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Pure gospel! The original lp closes with Simon (alone again) playing America!

There are a few pictures in a very small booklet but no additional information.
