The quality of both the sound and the material on this CD is superb. I've only deducted one star because I know that Willard White's touring show paying tribute to Paul Robeson contained many more songs. This CD could quite easily have included 20 tracks. The most unfortunate omission is, of course, 'Ol' Man River'. Maybe it was thought it would be more respectful to Robeson to leave it out but I'm sure anyone who's seen the show would want it included. It's a pity as Willard White's version finally reconciled the problem of the lyrics, including first the original lyrics before moving on to Paul Robeson's revised lyrics, enabling the song to be seen as a progression from lamentation to proud defiance.
What we do get, however, is 45 minutes worth of superb material. If you're a Robeson fan and you're wondering whether you should bother as you've already got Paul Robeson singing these songs, then let me assure you that you should. Willard White's voice is similar enough to Robeson's to lend the comparison, but he has his own method and is a great singer in his own right. Add to this the superb modern arrangements of the songs and this CD is a great compliment to any collection of Robeson recordings. All Robeson fans should buy this CD - it will make you a Willard White fan also!

It is nearly a week since I saw Willard White perform his Tribute to Paul Robeson show at the Kings Lynn Corn Exchange and I still haven't come back down to earth. This CD gives just a sample of the wonderful sounds from the show. As the liner notes say, the selections have been arranged to include the influences of modern rhythms and musical styles that were not yet fully developed in Robeson's day but still remaining true to the spirit of the originals. I would recommend anyone who has a musical soul to go and see the show but it is only recordings which can survive for posterity and therefore this CD is invaluable, even if it does include only half the number of songs. White is accompanied by a five-piece band, comprising trumpet, piano, bass, guitar and drums. I particularly like the early jazz songs 'Lazy Bones' (in the show Guy Barker, the trumpeter, pretends to fall asleep) and 'Got the South in My Soul', each of which includes some wonderful trumpet playing from Barker. But it is equally important that the missing songs should be recorded for posterity which include (to name just a few)exquisite versions of 'Trees', 'Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen', 'Down by the Riverside' and, of course 'Ol' Man River', which really is the equal of Paul Robeson's version, though different. So, come on, let's all of us who appreciate this music start a campaign for 'Volume 2'!!

I agree with your other reviewers, this is an absolutely first class recording by a first class artist. My copy is SACD/HDCD and on an HDCD player it has to be the best CD I have for recording quality, but when listening on a standard player the quality is hardly any different.
It would be nice to have more songs, especially "Ol man river", but Willard's voice is excellant throughout. I have several versions of Joe Hill, but none as good as this, also, the musicians used are superb, especially the trumpeter.
After buying this I went out and bought a double CD of Paul Robeson, my mother used to love him, but I would never have thought of buying him. The recording quality and older arrangement are, naturally, not up to this modern recording, but a great buy anyway, thanks to this Willard White CD.
I managed to see and hear Willard at a Leeds Castle concert a few years back, but unfortunately I didn't get to the Paul Robeson tribute concert, so come on, Linn Records and Willard, bring out a Volume 2!

I loved this. Having seen Willard White in person, singing these emotive songs in the perfect style of Paul Robeson, I was determined to buy it, and have not been at all disappointed. It never fails to affect the emotions.
