I already have travel scrabble and the very old travel scrabble and when I saw this was out, I had to have it. The board is very large but is really sturdy and the tile racks and tiles are high quality and durable. There is a different coloured square in the board so you can play both 'normal' and 'super' scrabble. Its great with overlapping double word tiles so you can quadruple your score, as well as the new quadruple word tiles in each corner and quadruple letter scores makes it a very highscoring and competitive game! I highly recommend it.

SUPER SCRABBLE is a variation of the classic boardgame SCRABBLE, only this one has a bigger board (21x21 instead of 15x15, although the 15x15 section is still marked out, so you effectively get the original SCRABBLE at the same time), more tiles (including 2 Js, 2 Qs, 2 Xs and 2 Zs, so words like PUZZLE and JAZZ are now possible without the need for a blank), and some new premium squares in the form of Quadruple Letter Score squares and Quadruple Word Score squares. Higher-scoring games are now possible (experienced gamers may even break into quadruple-figure scores!).

If you've played regular SCRABBLE before then you really have little need to read the instructions, as they are much the same, although some popular misunderstandings that have confused some players have been pointed out in the new instruction booklet. The tiles are wooden, as are the letter-racks, although I would have preferred it if the letter racks weren't curved in the bit upon which the tiles sit, and if the lip that holds them up were bigger; as they currently are it is quite easy to knock them off accidentally. I would also have preferred it if it was a board that only folded in half, like in previous SCRABBLE games, as this version folds into four and has a split on one half to enable you to do this, meaning that you cannot simply halve the board and tip the tiles into the bag when you have finished playing. Also, the game is a little bit on the expensive side, especially as they don't even provide you with a score pad and/or pencils.

However, the game is probably even more fun to play now, and if you liked SCRABBLE then there's no reason why you shouldn't like SUPER SCRABBLE. In fact, if you enjoy it but tend to get really low scores compared to everyone else then you might even feel that you stand a better chance due to the increased number of tiles (I have witnessed such occurrences in actual matches using SUPER SCRABBLE).

Having spent many hours playing Scrabble in the past we bought this as a new challenge. It does boost the ego to get large scores and we recently had four seven letter words in 5 turns. It isn't a quick game, but the number of tiles means that you can still catch up after falling miles behind. Tactics are slightly different and you become less concerned about leaving triple words open because there are so many scoring opportunities.

I was disappointed by the quality of the set, others have mentioned the folding board and not quite square letters, but it has already paid for itself in hours of entertainment. If we lose any tiles we will simply replace them from an old Original game.

As for scoring we use the travel scrabble to keep score although with just two playing we often both go past the 799 maximum.

This is the fifth Scrabble set to be welcomed to my home after the pocket, travel, ordinary and de luxe editions. The concept of the expanded game is not original - three dimensional chess has been around for years - but this is a genuinely different game: you soon learn to race for the dizzying scores available in the extra zone e.g. slap QUIZZES across the two nearly adjacent double word scores, with the Q on the quadruple letter score, to rattle your opponents' racks with a shattering 306.

I concur with Mr. Whitaker's views on the irritating design faults: the untippable board is a beast to clear of 200 tiles by hand. We just substituted the ugly plastic racks from previous sets to deal with the problem of tiles dropping off the ledges. I also feel that with a fairly expensive set of this number of pieces, the mislaying of one or two tiles down the years is inevitable: surely a handful of additional blanks could have been provided to replace such losses.

Several designs of scoresheets can be downloaded from the Association of British Scrabble Players' website [...] The website listed on the Super Scrabble box barely supports the game at all and the bland blue single score sheet with instructions to photocopy is hardly useful. Another scoring solution is to open an Excel spreadsheet on a nearby computer and save the weary business of adding up those huge scores.

I enjoyed the retro, slightly uneven wooden tiles, though friends have pointed out that familiarity with their characteristics may lead to cheating!

All in all, a great addition to the world of non-battery powered traditional board games.

'Super Scrabble' is a game that will certainly entertain and challenge you for many, many years to come. The great thing about it being that it is EXACTLY the same game as ordinary Scrabble but with added elements to the game play. What I mean by this is that, with an extra 100 tiles AND the introduction of QUADRUPLE word squares higher scores and longer words are possible. There are now 2Q's, 2Z's, 4 blank tiles and a host more s's which also spices up the ability to get big scores. A veteran player of the original version of this game, what I have also found with this new variant of the game is that the longer format and new lay-out of the board means that you always have a chance to come back to win from a hefty deficit (most of the Quadruple word squares are at the edge of the board and so only come into play late in the game making comebacks a distinct possibility). The only slight downsides to do with this package are to do with the manufacture of the plying pieces and board. The board 'folds' a number of times and as such has no turn-table underneath it. Not only does this mean that it will not prove as long lasting as before but it also lacks the plastic tile grip of before which means that any significant jog to the board can ruin a game. The tiles and tile holders are also made of wood. This would not be such a bad thing had the tile holders been made with a 'deeper cut' to allow the tiles to sit more securely in them. Unfortunately there have already been a few occasions when I've been moving letters about trying to compose a seven letter word and the letters have 'slipped' from the tile holder in some cases revealing themselves to my opponent. Manufacturing niggles aside however this is a cracking game and one for dedicated and new 'Scrabblers' alike. Excellent.
