Chico Hamilton came to national prominence with the success of his records recorded for Pacific Jazz in the mid 50s. These recordings were typical of West Coast Jazz, featuring unusual instrumental line-ups, and tightly arranged music. Hamilton went onto become one of the most important drummers and band leaders in jazz. In 1963 Pacific sold a selection of out-takes from Hamilton s most important sessions to Modern Records for issue on the Crown label. This disc focuses on a series of recordings that featured the adventurous saxophonist Paul Horn, and are amongst some of Hamilton s finest work. The album features tracks from three separate sessions and three different bands firstly with Howard Roberts on guitar and George Duvivier on bass, then with Jim Hall and Duvivier again, and finally a quintet with Paul Horn, cellist Fred Katz, John Pisano on guitar and Carson Smith on bass. A mid-price digipak release.
