Having read all the hype, I am disappointed with this book. It might be comprehensive but it is confusing, not just because of some typo errors but because of its rather loose use of terminology and occasionally crazy cross-referencing. Examples - Take the errors on the lettering system under "Personal Figure Variations" on page 42, the reference to a "basic front hip" and a "back basic hip" on page 667 (what are these??? - there is nothing in the index under "basic front hip", "front hip" or hip measurements and the chapter on measurements doesn't mention them). There is a dizzying jumping about from page to page to find the diagrams for measurements. The points of reference for these measurements (eg where exactly in the shoulder do I measure from?) are open to interpretation. I could go on... Honestly, how's a gal s'pposed to cope as a novice (to this particular method of patternmaking)? I blinked and missed or forgot the explanation for the "HBL" abbreviation and couldn't find it in the index either. There is no doubt a wealth of information in this book but I am afraid I have found it thoroughly frustrating.

Excellent patternmaking book. Follow the clear instructions and you will be able to design anything. For the price of 5 Burda's, you'll never have to buy a useless dressmaking magazine ever again because you'll be able to design it yourself. You will need to appply yourself and be acurate and you will be rewarded with a perfectly fitting article of clothing. All aspects of patterndesigning are covered, even vital information on how to design knitwear.I was a bit wary about ordering such a pricy book but I will certainly advise everyone who dabbles in sewing/pattermaking/changing/designing to buy this book. DVD included. 803 pages full of information you have always wanted know - or never knew you needed to know! I would prefer metric but I am so glad this book is mine.

If you want to get on a pattern drafting course and there are none in your area ( as in my case) then get this book! It is very clear and easy to follow. At £74 it isn't cheap but compared to about £250 for a course ( if you can find one) I think it is very good value, at last I can make patterns to suit the demands of my very fussy daughter!

This has been both a source of fountain like knowledge and mild frustration due to a lack of personal knowledge. It is a Hefty book covering everything you can think of regarding patternmaking.
My difficulty is as a new sewer I wanted to understand the "engineering" of RTW patterns V Custom Fit how ro grade and draw them, make adjustments etc etc and like so many new sewers I purchased a number of books on the subject...but it has taken till now, having worked through the other books that I fully understand and appreciate the sheer volume of quality information in this book.

I read one review saying that one lady used this book as her "Degree" as there was nowhere local enough offering courses of equal depth....and I couldn't agree more....this book contains everything you could ever want to know about Patternmaking and would see any aspiring seamstress through everything they would learn on a degree course....plus a useful source of reference for the future.

The DVD however offers little incentive as it is just a sales pitch for drafting software.....It would be nice if it had included PDFs of the measurement tables ....as is so often the case measurements change overtime and being such a bulky book makes it difficult to copy the pages, despite there being a blank set at the end of each chapter.....I actually resorted to cutting one out of the book.

I feel that I have to write a review for this book as it is absolutely without doubt one of the best books that I have ever bought. I completed a National Diploma and a Degree in Fashion Design, yet I learned an incredible amount from this book after graduating. It is rather easy to follow and I read some pages over and over again, and find it extremely useful.

If anybody needs assistance with pattern cutting and they are looking for something quite simple to follow, then this is your answer. It covers absolutely everything that you need to know.

Very very happy with my purchase. I refer to it most days.

Although this book is comprehensive I am disapointed that it was sold as a European version but, only includes imperial measurements and not metric. Also the cover is very flimsy which makes it difficult not to tear as it is a large and heavy book. Because of this I feel that it is way over priced!

I've been eyeing this book for months, wondering if it was really worth spending so much. I have the series of pattern cutting books from Winifred Aldrich which are ok, get the job done, but I find needs lots of tweaking in the toile stage, which the book doesn't really go into in depth.

Although I've not made anything from this book so far I can see that it is much more thorough and more up-to-date. It shows you how to adjust fit, gives you little assignments along the way to build up your skills and so on. It reads like a text book, almost as if you have the teacher there with you.

I am very pleased that I finally caved and bought this book. I highly recommend it and it is well worth the money. Don't hesitate!
